"Cycling isn’t just my mode of transportation today; it’s a potent symbol of the sustainable future we need. It’s a reminder that progress doesn’t have to come at the expense of the planet. The bicycle offers a unique perspective – a slower pace that allows us to appreciate our surroundings and reconnect with the environment. It’s a call to action, a tangible example of how small changes in our daily lives can have a significant impact."

"Earth Overshoot Day is a stark reminder that we're all passengers on this spaceship called Earth. We have a collective responsibility to ensure its continued health. This doesn't require grand gestures, just a conscious effort from each individual. Let's hold ourselves and our leaders accountable. Let's choose a sustainable future, one bike ride, one reusable bag and one conscious decision at a time.

Our road to a sustainable future is paved with countless small steps, and each of us has the power to take a stride in the right direction. Let's start today, right here, right now, in Copenhagen so that next year we can push this day to the end of the year where it belongs."

SHEDDING LIGHT

"Being able to ride your bike at night is a central part of an urban cycling lifestyle, and while it may seem like a simple “no-brainer” there are some considerations to be made when choosing your lights. More is not always better and the rules vary from place to place across Europe. Bike lights have two functions: One, is to help you see in the dark and the other is to help make you more visible to others, be they cyclists pedestrians or motorists."

AN ELECTRON WIND

"At Coh&Co we produce unique bicycles ideally suited for the urban environment. A growing portion of these are e-bikes. E-bikes have been around for almost 130 years, it is however first during the past decade or so that they have managed to come of age. Much of this is due to battery technology and controller technology. Modern lithium-ion cells have a power density greater than 4 or 5 times that of an old-fashioned lead-acid battery from yore. Just as important as power density, they have gotten much smaller occupying less than one-twelfth of the space when measured in Wh/L. That means there is much more zoom for the room and less weight to push around."

"These encounters with pedelecs have reshaped my understanding of cycling. From the initial blow to my ego to the realisation of the practicality and inclusivity of e-bikes. I’ve come to see them not as a crutch but as a tool for empowerment. As I continue my cycling adventures, I carry with me the lessons learned—the fusion of tradition and innovation, the importance of adaptability, and the joy found in the journey is always better to get out for a ride than it is to stay at home wishing you could get out there. I have often joked that I am too old for an electric bike, pointing out that I have reached an age where I need to make a continual effort to stay in shape; be that as it may, I am aware that a day may come when I choose to subsidise my efforts with a motor and re-empower myself to make the unachievable both achievable and fun again. So, whether battling headwinds or conquering hills, I embrace each pedal stroke with newfound appreciation, knowing that with the wind at my back, anything is possible."

"And you know what? It’s not just about seasoned cyclists or adventurers on epic tours. E-bikes can be likened to a gateway drug to a more bike-friendly world. They make cycling a part of everyday life, not just for the enthusiasts but for anyone looking for a healthier, more convenient way to get around. With an e-bike, suddenly that daunting 15-kilometre commute doesn’t seem so bad. You can arrive at work feeling refreshed instead of exhausted, ready to tackle the day ahead. Cycling is not just about the physical benefits; it’s about reclaiming time that would have been lost sitting in traffic or waiting for public transportation. Not to mention, you’re doing your part to reduce congestion and lower emissions — talk about a win-win! E-bikes are helping to revolutionise urban lifestyles, making it easier than ever to run errands, meet friends, or just explore — all without the hassle of finding parking or worrying about gridlock. They’re opening up new possibilities for recreation and adventure, whether it’s a leisurely ride along a scenic bike path or a spontaneous trip to that trendy café across town. So, while they may give a helping hand to those tackling long distances or steep hills, they’re also levelling the playing field, making cycling accessible and enjoyable for everyone."

"Anyone who cycles regularly has experienced the sensation of soaring. Soaring on a bike is the sensation that all is as it should be. You feel like you are in great form and the bike accelerates almost effortlessly. You're ahead of the game and you're feeling good. Unfortunately, this is sometimes followed by a bit of a downer when on your return trip you discover that the wind is against you and your legs and bicycle are both slower and heavier than on the trip out."

CYCLING TO WORK

"For those coming into town from the countryside (or vice versa), public transit, like trains, further extends the commuting range. Combining the train with a bike commute provides a versatile and efficient transportation solution – a balance of fitness and fun instead of sitting behind the wheel in traffic. Multimodal commuting with a bike allows you to cover longer distances without relying on a car and often without considerably extending the time needed. Last spring, I had a period where I had a 120-kilometer commute and it took me about an hour and 20 minutes by car and an hour and 35 minutes by train and bicycle – 40 minutes of which were spent having fun and exercising and 55 minutes of which were spent reading or working on my laptop. By using a bike for the first and last few kilometers to and from the train station, you can avoid traffic congestion, “road rage” and parking hassles while incorporating physical activity into your daily routine. This hybrid approach promotes sustainable travel, reducing carbon emissions and alleviating urban congestion while giving you more time for yourself."

"One of our recurring themes here at Coh&Co is commuting. We love to ride and we love to take a roll on the weekends, but it is in everyday life that bikes get under your skin. Getting up in the morning and juggling the kids out the door to climb into the family VeloSled where they can finish breakfast as you discuss school or afternoon plans. Enjoying the wind in your hair as you soar through town and even getting to the top of that irritating hill before the final stretch to the office are all seasoning on a daily commute. Quality time with kids, getting off the train to unfold your folding bike and zip off the final kilometer or two are all quality moments that invigorate."

"This final point raises an issue. I have always been quite fortunate to not be the victim of thieves or vandalism. I have heard many horror stories but I have always been well treated and thankfully I have never had property stolen or vandalised while touring. I always lock my bike to a railing or a lamppost, I prefer to lock two bikes together and run the lock cable through the handles of my panniers. I am also quite aware of parking my bike in a visible manner where someone would feel exposed if they started tampering with it."

"Bicycle touring is for me a door into a world of people and experiences, a slower world with a different rhythm. I often get asked a myriad of questions about how far I ride in a day and where I stay and what I pack and truth be told none of the answers are impressive or categorical. Distance is one of the first thoughts and although I do have days where I get close to or even surpass the 100 km mark, most days seem to dwindle around 70 to 90 on the flats and 60 to 80 in the more mountainous regions. Last summer I rode over 1.200 kilometres meandering from Copenhagen to Vienna and the first 5 days averaged between 50 and 60 km/day. After these first days I got closer to the 70 – 90km that carried me through most of the rest of the trip. Now this may not seem like a lot, but actually, it is plenty to fill a day with several hours in the saddle and combined with a stop or three for breakfast, lunch and a beer or two and we are well on our way to an eventful day."
