PP Møbler

PP Møbler Fine furniture, handcrafted by cabinetmakers in Denmark since 1953. The world-famous Danish designer, Hans J. Wegner is very much in focus at PP Møbler.

PP Møbler is a family owned Danish joinery workshop, established in 1953, with a strong tradition for crafting design furniture of high quality. Motivation has always been the love of wood and a stubborn belief that technique, ingenuity and craftsmanship can be combined in the strive for quality. Nevertheless, other designers have also made contributions to our production. Many of these designers

are nationally and internationally acclaimed, but we also keep an eye out for new talents. The differences between the individual designers are easy to spot. However, central to all in their cooperation with PP Møbler is their exploration of the possibilities of wood.

Designed in 1952 as a continuation of the ideas explored in the Round Chair, the Cow Horn Chair was developed for a different purpose. Hans J. Wegner created a more compact chair that would fit naturally underneath a dining table, while still carrying the same sculptural clarity in its construction. The back and armrests are formed from two large pieces of solid wood joined at the centre, where Wegner chose not to hide the necessary joint, but instead emphasise it through visible contrasting tenons. What began as a constructive solution became an important reflection of Wegner’s approach to design, where technical necessity and visual expression are closely connected.

The Cow Horn Chair is built around a construction detail that is both highly technical and visually defining. The back and armrests are shaped from two large pieces of solid wood, joined at the centre where the wood meets end grain against end grain. This type of joint is naturally difficult to stabilise and demands exceptional precision in both shaping and assembly.

To resolve this, Wegner introduced contrasting wood tenons that lock the construction together while becoming an integrated part of the chair’s expression. Far more than a hidden technical solution, the tenons emphasise the geometry of the back and bring balance to the overall form of the chair.

For decades, Hans J. Wegner pursued the idea of creating an easy chair based on the simplest shape of all: the circle. When the Circle Chair was finally realised in 1986, the design demanded an entirely new way of working with wood.

One of the greatest challenges was the construction of the large circular frame. In order to achieve the required strength and precision, a custom built moulding machine was developed specifically for the chair. Thin layers of solid wood are bent into a complete ring and glued together in a single operation with immense accuracy and concentration. Each layer is carefully staggered to create the necessary strength while maintaining the refined expression of the chair.

The Circle Chair became one of the most technically demanding projects ever developed in the workshop and remains a remarkable example of how far the possibilities of wood can be pushed through craftsmanship and persistence.

At the age of 73, after decades of shaping some of the most recognised chairs in modern furniture history, Hans J. Wegner designed the pp68 as his final round back dining chair. Rather than creating something extravagant, he focused on refining the qualities he valued most through a lifetime of work: comfort, strength, practicality and durability.

Every detail in the construction serves a clear purpose. The solid wood frame is joined with strong tenons, tested to withstand remarkable pulling strength, while the shape of the chair allows the body to shift naturally between seating positions over long periods of time.

Few chairs reveal the demands of cabinetmaking as clearly as the Round Chair. Every joint remains fully exposed, requiring an exceptional level of precision from the workshop. The flowing transition between armrest and back appears effortless, yet depends entirely on carefully selected wood and meticulous handwork. The result is a chair where strength and refinement exist in complete balance.

The Captain’s Chair was never designed for life at sea. Yet in 1978, more than 800 specially made versions of the chair were delivered to the DFDS ferry Dana Anglia sailing between Denmark and England.

A few years later, after a violent storm had destroyed nearly the entire interior of the ferry, the company contacted the workshop to replace just two damaged chairs. Every other Captain’s Chair had remained intact. Even one chair that had lost its seat was later found washed ashore on the Danish west coast with the frame still unharmed.

The story says something not only about the strength of the construction, but also about the level of precision behind each joint and dimension in the chair.

For 2026, the Flagship Store in Carlsberg Byen becomes an open workshop and an exhibition centred around the Circle Chair.

Visitors can experience live demonstrations and gain insight into the craftsmanship and precision behind some of Hans J. Wegner’s most demanding designs. The programme also includes presentations and opportunities to explore the history behind the chair and the close collaboration between Wegner and PP Møbler.

Reduced to only what is necessary, the Minimal Chair demonstrates Hans J. Wegner’s ability to create comfort and stability through the simplest possible means. The construction is direct and uncompromising, where proportions, joinery and the natural qualities of the wood carry the entire expression. The gently shaped back offers support without restricting movement, allowing the chair to adapt naturally to everyday use.

The back of the Valet Chair is shaped with a very specific purpose. It is not only a structural element but functions as a hanger, allowing garments to be placed directly on the chair.

The construction is demanding at every stage. Each part must align accurately for the chair to function both as seating and as a valet, and the transitions between elements leave little tolerance for deviation. The shaping of the back, in particular, requires careful manual work to achieve the correct proportions and surface. This makes the Valet Chair one of the more complex pieces in the workshop, where the clarity of the final form reflects a high level of control in both joinery and carving.
