“𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀” - 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗚𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆
While offering a smooth relocation and transition to your new home may be our highest priority, we also want you to enjoy your new location. To cut out confusion, here are some fun or useful facts about living in Germany.
1. Germans love paperwork. Germans get nervous if they haven’t checked their mailbox - yes, we mean the old school physical ones - in over a week. Getting used to this habit might save you some dunning charges, like for the public broadcasting bill that you have to pay, even if you make no use of it.
2. Most Germans speak English. Especially in larger cities, communication should not be a problem. That being said, your local bakery or kiosk (newsstand) might be the exception.
3. If you cross the street despite the red pedestrian light, chances are high that the rule-loving germans will give you a judging side-eye. But when there are children around, expect some harsh comments on your failed role model function.
4. Germans love cash. While Covid and other pressures have (finally) pushed Germany to become a more cashless society, carrying a couple of coins is always a good idea. Small purchases are often still made exclusively with cash.
Sundays in Germany are sacred - its called the Ruhetag (Resting day). Most shops are closed, and loud parties or vacuum cleaning might jeopardise your relationship with your neighbours.
