sandra nielen design

sandra nielen design Berlin based independent furniture designer I value people making conscious choices: in the things they do and in the things they surround themselves with.

I like to see my work as a contribution to these choices. To contribute, together with the joy and fulfillment of creating, are my major motivations to design.

As an independent furniture designer I am involved in every step of the creating process: from the conception of an idea, through the modeling, planning and preparation of the material, to the construction of the final product. During thi

s process clear communication is key for me to come to a close understanding with my clients.

I aim to create aesthetic, functional, and timeless furniture using high quality materials. My work is twofold: you can order my existing design pieces which can be adapted to your needs where necessary, or I can design entirely new custom made projects according to your specific requirements.

Interested in my work? Feel free to contact me, or visit me in my atelier in Berlin.

Pure materials and transparency in design.

For me two of the more important things in a design are the material and the technique. I have a preference for pure materials, and like to use them in a way that fits their characteristics. In my designs the material and the technique often forms the detail.

In a couple of my designs I work with raw uncoated copper. I love the warm color of copper and like the idea that the influence of time and usage will change the texture and appearance.

I used metal frames in a couple of my designs. When the frames are welded I like to show the welts. And if a protection layer is required, I like to make that transparent. I don´t like to hide things, I prefer to show how things are made.

shelving system Cable

The use of steel cable in this shelving system plays a key role in the construction and it's details.

No screws, dowels or glue joints are used. Everything is held together by the cable.

The cable runs from the front, through the sides, to the back, where it forms a cross. The adjustible tension in the cable and the cross in the back creates the stability of the shelves as a whole.

I am a designer and a carpenter
I am also a woman and I look like this

Sometimes I feel not taken serious. To those, who make me feel like this, I would like to say: Don't let appearance fool you, look at your presumptions.

But many times I feel appreciated. To those, who make me feel like this, I would like to say: Thank you so much for your support.

I love to learn. The feeling of expanding your understanding and techniques. To improve your skills to create more.

This time I learned the technique to make a miter joint with multiplex. In a way that the grain continues around the corner.

It might be a minor detail for some. But for me It's all in the details.

Thank you for teaching me.
