📐 Kitchen Work Triangle Rules & Dimensions
A good kitchen layout isn’t about looks alone — it’s about how smoothly you can move while cooking. That’s where the kitchen work triangle rules come in. Designers have tested these guidelines for decades, and they still work today.
🔺 Basic Triangle Measurements
Add the three sides of your triangle (sink ↔ stove ↔ refrigerator):
✅ Ideal total distance: 13–26 feet
❌ Over 26 feet = too much walking
❌ Under 13 feet = feels cramped and crowded
📏 Recommended Distances
• Sink → Stove: 4–7 feet
• Sink → Refrigerator: 4–6 feet
• Stove → Refrigerator: 4–7 feet
These ranges create smooth movement without wasted steps.
🚶♂️ Space You Need to Cook Comfortably
For one cook, allow at least 42 inches of clear space. Make sure that:
✔ No cabinets or islands block the triangle paths
✔ Cabinet doors don’t hit each other
✔ Appliance doors can fully open without obstruction
A well-planned work triangle makes your kitchen faster, safer, and far more enjoyable to use.
