🌊🌊🌊 Today, at the kind invitation of The Explorers Club of New York, our Executve Director, Cristián Pérez, will be hosting a panel in Spanish*, focused on Ocean (and coastal) issues in LatAm, as part of ‘World Oceans Week 2021’ (June 6-12) presented by ROLEX (*closed captions in English).

The panel “Ocean issues facing the Latin American Region” will be moderated by Ricardo Jordán —former Head of UN-Eclac’s (CEPAL) Human Settlements Unit of their Sustainable Development and Human Settlements Division. Covering issues including (1) the invisible microbiomes —the ocean’s most fundamental fabric, (2) the economic, environmental, and social challenges faced by indigenous peoples of the Mexican coast in Baja California, (3) the forgotten hazards, our perceptions and behavior on the coast, and solutions across Latin America and the Caribbean coming from young leaders crossing all sectors, as well as (4) coral bleaching and restoration of the magnificent Mesoamerican Reef.

LOW IS SLOW

Stewart Brand and Paul Saffo, founders of The Long Now Foundation, discuss the Pace Layers framework for how a healthy society functions, which Stewart introduces in his book The Clock of Long Now (01999).

The Pace Layers idea is illustrated by a simple diagram showing six layers which function simultaneously at different speeds within society, ranging from Nature (the lowest and slowest) to Fashion (the fastest, showed at the top). As the layers progress, Stewart proposed, their differing speeds help make a society more adaptable.

Based on this idea, cultures can be robust and healthy precisely because these layers come into conflict. Each level should be allowed to operate at its own pace, safely sustained by the slower levels below and kept invigorated by livelier levels above.

The Long Now Foundation is a non-profit dedicated to making long-term thinking more common.
