Sincere thanks to everyone who responded with their offers and suggestions to my call for help in finding a new and suitable home for Jud’s extensive collection of books. Back in May, I was very fortunate to connect with Sandra Carr - Sandra is the Fine Furniture Program Instructor at Camosun College. With support from Sandra and Margie - Camosun’s Librarian - I was able to donate a better part of the collection to Camosun’s library where they will provide inspiration to many aspiring furniture design and visual art students. We made a trek to the island on one this summer’s hottest days with twenty boxes of books in tow, and had the wonderful experience of meeting Sandra and Margie in person. Sandra graciously offered us a tour of her students’ workspace and then took us for a first hand glimpse of her graduating students’ yearend show “Arbutiful Life” - a beautiful collection of hardwood furniture pieces demonstrating the students’ appreciation for design and their unique wordworking skills. . . an experience that only reinforced how absolutely perfect this new home was for Jud’s treasured books. I am only sorry that Jud did not have a chance to meet with Sandra as the connection with their shared passions for inspiring others and for furniture design would have been immediate. Unbeknownst to me, Jud’s books included some added “extras”....boarding passes, book store receipts, museum passes, city maps, postcards, sketches and photos from around the world, all carefully tucked into the pages as the books were amassed. As Margie came across the objects and collected them together to send back to me, she realized that they provided a unique glimpse into Jud’s extraordinary life. We are so fortunate for the many many works and treasures that Jud left behind. I am sincerely grateful that his books will continue to do what Jud was so passionate about - motivating and inspiring others. Thank-you sincerely to Sandra Carr, to Margie Clarke and to Camosun College Library.
