Why Deconstruct? Homeowner Tax Receipts - Receive a tax receipt for the value of the goods and mitigate additional costs involved with deconstruction versus demolition. Landfill Diversion - materials can be repurposed and given a new life, reducing GHG emissions needed to create a new products. Eco Friendly - options to integrate salvaged materials into new builds. Homeowners feel better about deconstructing and salvaging material when they are taking a house down rather than crushing it and seeing the waste going to the landfill. Good for the planet, good for the pocketbook, good for the collective conscience.

The Rebuild Hub is based in Metro-Vancouver and all proceeds from the sale of salvaged materials go to Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver to assist their affordable housing build projects.

Deconstruction Case Study from the City of Vancouver - Local Government.

This 1910 house in Riley Park was deconstructed by Unbuilders in 2018. It is clear to see the advantages of deconstruction and how much of a house can be salvaged for reuse and recycling.

And of course all profits from donations to the Rebuild Hub go towards Habitat for Humanity's affordable home building projects.

Why not see how much you could salvage from your home?

Deconstruction is an essential part of moving the building industry to a circular economy.

Moving from "take, make, waste" to an economy that reuses materials and keep them in the system is essential as we move towards a more sustainable future.

Keeping these valuable materials in circulation creates value, new products and more jobs in transport, storage, sorting, refurbishing, upcycling, resale and recycling.

Have you had a house torn down in your neighborhood? I'm sure you remember the noise, the dust and the destruction.

Demolition causes distress to local people and wildlife. Deconstruction by hand is a much gentler process that saves the history, character and value of the materials of a home.

This is the future we need for happy, healthy communities as well as for our environment.

Don't demolish. Deconstruct.

Deconstruction creates jobs.

When you deconstruct a home instead of demolishing it, not only do you salvage valuable materials from landfill but you also help support many more jobs throughout the deconstruction and salvage industry.

Deconstruction involves a larger crew of workers to dismantle the building by hand over a few weeks rather than a small crew destroying a house in a few days with an excavator.

Downstream many more jobs are created to transport, sort, store, sell and recycle the salvaged materials as they return to use in the system.

The Rebuild Hub was gratefully asked to attend the District of North Vancouver's Climate Action Advisory Committee meeting this week.

It was great to hear about the zero waste initiatives they have already launched and to speak to them about deconstruction and the Rebuild Hub as they plan to reduce the amount of construction and demolition waste generated in the district.

Some forward thinking ideas and discussion was had to tackle this hugely important issues and we are excited to see how their plans progress over the coming weeks and months.

33%. One Third! That's the portion of all the solid waste that heads to landfill each year in Canada that comes from construction, renovation & demolition.

Obviously there is a big issue here, but with that comes a big opportunity to reduce the amount of waste we are producing. Through deconstruction, salvage, re-use and design for disassembly we can do much better as an industry.

If you want to be part of the solution then get in touch. Whether you are an individual, home owner, contractor or designer we all have a way to contribute.
