Cary Michael Morris Design A collection of new contemporary furniture/objects of art by Canadian designer, Cary Michael Morris.

My distinctly refined collection of contemporary furniture is created for a sophisticated art collector that appreciates museum quality craftsmanship and exceptional design... a statement piece that amazes and amuses. (It is my hope, that my unique designs will make people of all ages, smile for generations.)

This is a photo I found online that reflects the dream I had recently, where my next contemporary furniture design appeared. I just need to focus and whip up a few 'quick concept sketches' of the wall cabinet and post them... stay tuned. (I promise it will be worth the wait. Haaaah!)

These are a few 'quick concept sketches' of a bold, new contemporary furniture design that appeared awhile ago, when I was dreaming... as I've mentioned in previous posts, random contemporary furniture designs just choose to appear in my dreams, (for whatever reason) and they have for decades. I always find myself alone in the dream, sometimes walking through a contemporary design museum or walking up the staircase to the different levels of a high end contemporary design boutique. I just casually look around at the contemporary furniture designs on display, (I'm aware that I'm seeing them in a dream, so I make a point to focus on a couple remarkable designs... I'll walk up closer, open them and make mental notes of the various details, colours, etc., etc. When I wake up, I put pen to paper and make a rough sketch and quickly write down the various details, so I can do a few 'quick concept sketches' on the computer later. I should also mention there are no drugs or hallucinogens involved... in fact, I don't do drugs, don't drink, don't smoke, I don't even drink tea or coffee. Soooo yeah, you could say I'm a strange bird. Haaaah!)

This sculptural object with a captivating, abstract silouette has been floating around in my head for awhile, waiting to be sketched on a computer... sold as a matching pair of curiousity cabinets, that I call 'Curiouser And Curiouser' with one cabinet exterior made of polished stainless steel and the other cabinet exterior made of a polished gold plating. Reflective surfaces that catch the light, revealing a scultural composition that feels as playful as it is precise, with no visible indication that it's a functional storage unit.

There are hundreds of small coloured glass balls trapped between the curled horizontal straps that cover 3 sides of the exterior, (the 1 inch diameter small coloured glass balls are set in various colours that create a gradient effect from top to bottom... a different gradient colour scheme is added to the gold plated cabinet exterior, and to the stainless steel cabinet exterior.) The coloured glass balls look like they could slide from side to side, between the curled horizontal straps, but to maintain the exact design in production, they are set permanently in place, (it also avoids having the glass balls getting scratched or shattering, if constantly or aggressively pushed from side to side.) The curled horizontal straps wrap around the cabinet exterior at the front and sides, seamlessly joined at the round front corners. The horizontal pattern is interrupted by an opposite coloured metal panel set behind the coloured glass balls... which functions as a visual counterpoint, and contributes to its sculptural presence.

These curiousity cabinets are innovative, tactile statement pieces that define an interior space, setting the stage for a study in material and form. Sculpted with absolute precision, metal and glass come together with a metamorphic quality, merging practicality with poetic composition. The three separate storage units of each cabinet, swivel on a central point hidden underneath, (similar to a revolving door, the cabinet provides an unexpected transformation, while maintaining its sculptural presence.) Each storage unit is manually pushed at a front corner, as the back revolves around to the front. The two top storage units reveal locked cabinet doors, (the interior reveals a set of soft close/open drawers and shelves) and the bottom storage unit reveals a set of 5 soft close/open drawers.

The square pull k***s on the bottom storage unit drawers have coloured cabochon glass gems, to match the square pull k***s set flush into the top storage unit drawers. The matching coloured cabochon glass gem is also added on the tassel attached to the keys. (I should mention that because glass is so heavy, I may have to use coloured acrylic balls... there are over 1500 glass balls on each storage unit, for a total of almost 5000 glass balls on the exterior of each curiousity cabinet!) The cabinet interior, the back of the cabinet doors and the drawers are lined in a turquoise coloured natural suede, with the 'CMMD' trademark embossed in a repeat pattern, (the same colour natural suede is used on the tassel attached to the keys.) Each curiousity cabinet is elevated, with the top 2 storage units set on a four legged table top, and the bottom storage unit set on a wide plinth, (the plinth protects the cabinet from damage when floors are cleaned) and the 'CMMD' trademark is embossed into the center front of the plinth, (the embossed 'CMMD' trademark is filled in with the opposite metal colour.)

At once functional and sculptural, this contemporary furniture design transforms a functional storage unit into an object of remarkable presence, balancing ornament with geometry and tactility... it occupies that coveted territory where design transcends utility to become an enduring statement of bold design.

As I mentioned, only a limited production of 100 of each Cary Michael Morris Design will ever be made. (The 2 artist's proofs and 1 prototype will be kept in house/the showroom and are never to be sold... they can only be donated to a charity auction, when the 100 units have been sold and discontinued.) With every piece sold, there is included a hardcover book of photographs and a production history, with an informative DVD video, which highlights the journey of 'CMMD' over the years and details the step by step creation of the design process, through production and showroom delivery, with credit shown to the various master craftsmen and artists that worked on it. Along with a personally signed, trademarked 'CMMD' hologram certificate, as proof of provenance... each piece (or set) is also numbered, and then registered when sold.
