This cabin was built with concrete, cedar and a lot of love. It honours our husband and dad, Ray Hrynkow. He was a highly respected Canadian graphic designer, mentor and champion for design. This little spot in the woods incorporates work of Canadian designers and illustrators and is dedicated to all design, from architecture to industrial design to graphic design. Why call a cabin in the woods in
Tofino Ray of Sunshine? Because, when there is even a small break in the clouds, you will notice that this house fills with beautiful sunlight. It was designed by Vancouver architect Paul Lebofsky to take advantage of the sun. The concrete is used to collect passive solar heat to augment the heat pump system used in the house. Tofino is famous for summer droughts and has even had to close hotels in the summer due to water shortages. We have built this house to respect that fact, using a Rain Water Harvest system to fuel the washer, hoses and toilets. Please remember to be careful with water here in Tofino. It is a precious resource. We want to thank our kind and wonderful builder, Donny Collins from right here in Tofino for giving so much care and attention to this cabin. It has been a labour of love for all of us and Donny has been very accommodating in getting this unique design done right. Outside, surfers and beachcombers will love that the cabin is a 12-minute walk to Chesterman Beach. They’ll also appreciate the outdoor hot shower and the covered back deck with a private hot tub and BBQ. Inside, the open-concept living area has lots of room to stretch out with custom furniture, a fireplace, and a 46” flat-screen TV. On rainy days, it’s a cozy retreat with abundant comforts, including a fully equipped kitchen with stainless steel appliances, dishwasher, and almost every imaginable tool. There’s also a washer and dryer. The master bedroom on the main floor has a queen bed and ensuite bathroom with soaker tub and shower. There is direct access to the deck, sunken hot tub, and large, private, wooded setting. The upstairs bedroom has two double beds and a balcony overlooking the living area, which can be closed off for privacy. The ensuite bathroom has a large, walk-in shower. You can curl up with a book in the oversized leather chair in the upstairs reading nook. Respecting the precious rainforest environment, the cabin also uses a rain-water harvest system. Sleeps 6
