This dainty grey tallboy has come a long way. Originally painted in white with royal blue and yellow drawers (both inside and out!) this has been a complete transformation.

I stripped and sanded the entire body free of paint, hoping to keep some of the original wood. Unfortunately there was damage and necessary repairs that were not conducive to a wood look. For the drawers I had to completely disassemble them to remove all the paint, including the drawer bottoms. 😭

Once I had a clean slate to work with, I decided to use a can of Benjamin Moore mistint paint I had in a warm medium grey colour. The old hardware for this piece was cheap and white, so I knew I needed a new look. I wanted to bring out the warmth in this grey and oil-rubbed bronze k***s felt like just the right touch.

After many (many!) hours in the makeover studio, "Ophelia" is feeling like a new girl. She is cute and classic and would work well in a nursery or kids bedroom.

This 4 drawer Tallboy has been restored to his former glory. "Neville's" finish was old, dull and flaking, but with some stripping and sanding we got it looking better than new. The sides were showing too much wear to be restored, but some black paint provided a sharp contrast to the stunning front.

The top, base, drawers and wooden pulls were all brought back to their original wood. The drawers are smooth sliding and ready to spend another 60 years holding whatever you need!

This 9 drawer MCM dresser looks so much better without its old, dark brown finish.Β  After stripping and sanding off all the dark brown, I found some gorgeous light wood. I stained it in Pecan to give it a warm look. Some damage on the sides meant I needed to paint, and black and wood is always one of my favourites. Three coats of Black by Benjamin Moore did the trick.

"Nelson" is a solid piece with plenty of storage and a style that would make him fit in any room or decor.

The hardware on this 9 drawer dresser drew me in and I knew I wanted to highlight it. After cleaning, I began to sand the drawers. I was surprised to find a very light wood veneer underneath the old brown stain. I decided I wanted to keep the natural white wood and do a two-tone look.

Unfortunately the top was not solid wood or veneer, so I knew I would need to paint it. After sanding and repairing some imperfections, then priming with BIN shellac primer, I was ready to paint the top, sides and trim. I went with BM Black to give a modern contrasting colour scheme with the light drawers.

For the drawers, I sanded them smooth with 240 grit and sealed them with white wax. I also sanded down the wood legs and sealed them with white wax also. I painted the hardware and leg caps in 2 coats of matte black.

"Laurie's" final look is a striking modern take on an MCM piece. I would work as a dresser, tv stand or even a buffet!

Would you believe this gorgeous vanity is 87 years old?! I hope to look this good in my 80s. 🀣 "Katherine" has excellent bones and simply needed a little face lift. ➑️ Swipe to see the before.

After removing the hardware and taking apart the mirror, I gave the vanity a good vacuum and clean. Much of the failing finish on the drawers came off during the cleaning, but what didn't was sanded off with 150 grit and smoothed with 180 grit. The front legs were also hand-sanded back to raw wood (which took forever!)

I knew I wanted to do a two-tone look for this vanity, so the body and mirror frame were scuff-sanded. I had a new colour of paint I'd been wanting to try, Sandstone by . Going on, Sandstone looks almost white, but as it dries it is a very, very light gray. Against a white wall you can see the subtle grey tone, but it could definitely be mistaken for white against a different background.

I applied three coats of paint, sanding with 600 grit in between for a smooth finish with no brush strokes. I sprayed my favourite top coat of Varathane Diamond Wood Finish in Satin to all the painted parts.

For the drawers I applied h**p oil to bring out the natural rich tones of the wood. I especially love how it highlights the two strips of heartwood on the drawer faces. The legs were a different tone than the drawers, but I wanted the to match. I applied Minwax stain in Special Walnut and let the dry. I sealed them with some h**p oil and I think they're a pretty good match.

The original hardware was in excellent shape, it just needed a thorough cleaning. Using barkeeper's friend, a plastic scrub brush and lots of muscle, I was able to bring them back to their original shine.

"Katherine" is such a classically beautiful piece and I can totally see her being the centerpiece in a girl's or woman's bedroom.

*Note: some minor clouding on the upper left of the mirror due to fading of the reflective backing paint. The main part of the mirror is still excellent.

Dimensions: 35.5" W x 18" D x 35" H (67" to top of mirror)

This buffet was the bottom part of an 80s china cabinet that I split in two. I refinished the top a couple of months ago (look for the black display cabinet back in my feed), but wanted to do a different look for the bottom. I knew the orangey oak look had to go, but as this piece is solid oak, I really wanted to highlight the wood.

I first started by stripping off most of the old finish and sanded what didn't come off with the stripper. Given that the piece is solid wood, I wasn't worried about blowing through any veneer, so I started with 80 grit and then moved to 120. Once I was satisfied all the orange was gone, I moved up to 220 grit to get a smooth finish.

In order to prevent the orange from returning when applying a top coat, I knew I would have to do a paint wash to maintain the raw wood look I had achieved. I combined a bit of Algonquin by with some water in a 1:8 ratio. I applied two coats of paint wash, wiping it back and letting it dry thoroughly between coats. I also sanded with 220 after each coat to smooth out the raised grain.

After letting it dry and removing all dust, I applied my favourite top coat, Varathane Diamond Wood Finish in Satin. I sprayed 2 coats of top coat, sanding between with 400 grit, and 2000 grit after the last coat for a buttery smooth finish.

"Jude" is an incredibly well built buffet with a new, modern look that would look good in any home.

A previous client reached out asking if I would be able to refinish her buffet. She wasn't happy with the colour or hardware, and wanted more exposed wood and it to be a lighter tone. ➑️ Swipe to see the before.

As this was a previously painted piece, I wasn't sure what I would find underneath the paint. After removing the hardware, I began stripping the piece. The first layer of pale green paint came off fairly easily, but under that was some sort of black chalk paint that was adhered extremely well. I alternated between stripping and scraping to remove as much as I could. This is when I discovered that the drawers were in fact veneer and not solid wood. I had to be extremely careful when sanding as the veneer was so thin. Unfortunately, the cupboard door was too damaged to leave wood so it would have to be painted.

After removing almost all the black paint from the drawer fronts, I gave the drawers a light sand with 180 grit. I applied a paint wash of 1 part Angora by House & Canvas to 5 parts water. I did the paint wash twice to achieve the lightness I was going for. This also helped hide some of the black paint that was impossible to remove from the grain.

I also stripped and sanded the top of the buffet. This was also veneer and the edges were already worn through, so would have to be painted. I applied the same paint wash to the top of the buffet as the drawers. As the veneer was damaged in spots on the top near the edge, I had to break out the paints to camouflage a few spots.

The body was cleaned and scuff sanded, then painted in a custom sage green (mostly Bellwood by Fusion). I sprayed the entire piece with 2 coats of Varathane Diamond Wood Finish, with an extra cost on the top as that will be the most used surface. I added new, modern gold hardware that sits against the drawer to hide the previous hardware holes (which I filled, but could not match to the veneer).

The result is a lighter, more modern buffet, in a colour scheme my client was happy with. Thanks Sonia!

My client brought me a dresser and vanity that were solid, quality pieces that used to be her aunt's. She wanted to turn the vanity into two nighstands and give everything a more modern look. ➑️ Swipe to see the before.

It took a bit of work separating the vanity as old furniture is so well built! After much prying, pulling and even some sawing, I was able to get 2 nightstands! I did some patching with bondo and wood filler then sanded it smooth, while also giving a scuff sand to the bodies and tops of all the pieces.

My client wanted to keep the drawers wood, so I carefully sanded them down. Unfortunately the veneer was too thin on one drawer of the dresser and it ended up revealing the wood underneath. Despite many attempts, there was no way to stain that spot to match the rest of the wood, so I had to get creative.

I painted the bodies of both pieces in a creamy white chosen by my client; Mascarpone by Benjamin Moore. I painted a fun, geometric feature over the damaged drawer in Mascarpone as well. The wood was stained with both Early American and Walnut by Minwax.

These solid pieces now have a new modern look that will allow my client to continue to use her aunt's furniture for many years to come.

My first hutch top to display cabinet transformation! I've always seen others doing this type of makeover and it was on my 2023 list of "things to try". I was given this oak hutch with clean lines (➑️ swipe to see the before) for free, so decided to go for it.

I wanted a clean, classic look so decided to go all black. I removed the glass shelves, the glass from the doors and the light from inside the hutch. I also took off the doors and hinges for easier access to the inside. After a thorough cleaning and a scuff sand, I loaded my paint sprayer with Black by BM Advance.

I sprayed 3 coats on both the inside and outside of the cabinet as well as both sides of the doors. For the legs, I added two wood pieces underneath the cabinet on either side to make the bottom flush with the edge. I found the legs on Amazon and confirmed they can hold up to 1000lbs as this cabinet is solid! I screwed the legs into the wood underneath, reattached the doors and hinges, put the glass panels back in the doors and finally added back in the glass shelves.

I opted to not add any hardware to the doors as I wanted a clean look and they are easily opened as is. The final result is "Garrison", a solid, sleek cabinet that would fit seamlessly in any home.

This 4 drawer Bassett MCM dresser was in excellent condition, it just needed a modern update. The dated blond finish had to go! ➑️ Swipe to see the before.

When I picked up this piece one of the ring pulls was missing it's diamond backing. I really wanted to reuse the hardware, but figured I would have to replace the pulls on the top drawers. As I pulled out the drawers to clean them what should I find against the back of the dresser behind the bottom drawer? The missing diamond backing! I figured this was a good sign for this project.

Once the dresser was cleaned with Krud Kutter, I proceeded to sand the finish off the drawers. I started with 120 grit as I wanted to ensure I didn't blow through the veneer. Once the finish was removed, I gave all the drawers a tan was with 4 parts water to 1 part Algonquin by .

For the top and body of the dresser, there was a bit of damage that needed to be filled. As a result, I decided to paint these parts. I love a black and wood combo, so opted for "Black" by Benjamin Moore in their Advance line.

The hardware finish was worn in some parts so I decided to paint them to give a more clean, modern look. I really wanted the hardware to pop as it was what attracted me to the piece in the first place, so I opted to go black.

The end result is that "Felix" is looking fancy and ready to live his new life.

This 3 drawer waterfall dresser was A LOT of work, but so worth it in the end. I wish I had a before picture, but we had lots of peeling/missing veneer and a very dark brown dated finish. It definitely needed some help!

My first step was to remove the peeling veneer. This was the first time I was tackling this job and was worried because of all the videos I'd seen of wet towels, irons, chipping off little pieces, etc. I don't know if I just got lucky, but a little bit of heat from my heat gun and the veneer just lifted off. Sadly, this is where the easy part ended.

After removing the veneer from the top, I noticed the layer of wood under the veneer on the top was also damaged. I removed this as well and the curved waterfall piece fell off! Yikes. Thankfully I was able to reattach it and with the magic of a whole lot of bondo, wood filler, Kwik Wood, and sanding, I was able to get the top back to a smooth surface.

I proceeded to scrape, strip and sand the old finish off the rest of the dresser. The finish was hard to remove from all the grooves, but I had a vision of raw wood on the trim and sides so I persevered. Once 99% of the finish was off I sanded everything smooth.

For the wood parts I applied a tan wash of water and Algonquin by (4:1 water to paint). This was to even out the different tones of wood. I primed the top and drawers with BIN shellac primer. I sanded the primer smooth and applied 4 coats of Bellwood (also by Fusion). I finished it off by spraying two coats of Varathane Diamond Wood Finish in Satin, to the entire piece. I cleaned the original hardware, then sprayed them in Metallic Gold by Krylon.

A small project turned into a huge labour of love, but I couldn't be happier with how "Elsie" turned out. She's soft and feminine with just enough rustic charm so as not to be pretentious. In fact, Elsie is so likeable she's already in her new home!
