This is my grandmother, Anna. In the first pic, I must've been about 5 years old with my brother Rob (Michael came later). The second photo was taken about a year ago. She's turning 97 later this year, and I know how lucky we are to have her with us. She is the epitome of grace, wisdom, class, humour, resilience, strength and a healthy dose of stubborness with a killer smile that melts our hearts.
My grandparents immigrated to Canada with my mother over 70 years ago. They worked hard, had just enough with nothing going to waste. We grew up witnessing their resourcefulness. Learned how to repurpose, watched them find new ways to use the old, saving when, where and how they could.
They forged a better life for the generations that followed. We lost my grandfather over 20 years ago. Our grandmother (Nannie) has become even more cherished ever since.
This plant stand belonged to my parents, I remember it sitting in our foyer in our house in East York, I'm guessing back to the late '70's, early 80's. Mom put it out for trash, Nannie collected it and brought it home (waste not, want not!). It was used for years outdoors under a covered porch showcasing pots of beautiful flowers. The weather got the better of it, and the finish started to fail and chip off, on a visit she asked if I could do anything to save her.
We started with a good bath, and scrub to remove the flaking finish, then played with colour to highlight the existing design, and sealed the piece with a good coat of Odies Oil. She's now bright, beautiful and makes me feel happy and nostalgic!
I'm so grateful for the love, lessons and guidance I was raised with. Grateful to my Nannie for teaching me how; how to view people, places and things through fresh eyes, to see the value in the old, but not forgotten❤.
