Rebuilding memories

This new build replaced a dearly loved old cottage that had cedar lined rooms, antiques and heirlooms. The overall goal for the new build was to create a retreat that has warmth and character, where new memories could be made for decades to come. This photo of the kitchen is just one room that's a testament to the overall success of the project.

The most loved antiques and heirlooms are still part of the family. The carefully designed interiors are new wood, mostly cedar but there are traces of reclaimed wood from the old structure in some areas. The design of the cabinetry includes elements that reflect older pieces. The pantry is in the form of a 'flat to the wall', cutout kicks have a furniture feel, the island is a new version of a vintage butcher block.

Standby for Move in...

This beautiful custom home sits quietly waiting. It's the between time, the time right after the buzzing activity of painters, electricians, plumbers, cabinetmakers :) and cleaners. It's the time right before the front door swings open and the family with all their worldly possessions arrive on scene. That's when this beautiful space will transform into a home.

The bar will be a casual 'help yourself' to a cocktail or maybe a glass of wine, the kids will be helping themselves to their own bevvies below from their own shelf on the bar fridge. Brekkie and snacks will be pumped out of the pantry on a daily basis. The family will mill around for the prep of main meals, maybe sitting and chatting, maybe helping cook. Someone will set the table. When all's ready they'll take their places for the meal, they'll chat, they'll eat and together they'll enjoy the space that's been created uniquely for them.

Colour drenching the coffee bar in this new build adds an intriguing level of sophistication. Nestled in its own little room it's designed with an integrated wine fridge, liquor bottle drawers, garbage system and lots of storage. Glazed pocket doors can be slid closed but the sight-line remains balancing off the likewise dramatic fireplace on the opposite side of the space.

Leathered granite encases the island, there's storage galore behind push catch drawers, no hardware needed. Integrated pantry cabinet, column fridge and freezer tuck in the niche on the far side of the room. The range hood and uppers blend seamlessly with the full height backsplash keeping the space light and bright.

Black and White Luxury.

Asymmetrical layouts, so fun to design. The trial and error to achieve just the right balance, that slight feeling of tension that makes the space interesting. Add in the clients' passion for black and white, their desire for precision, and voila, this beautiful kitchen is superior in its level of sophistication and luxury components.

An electrical column in the island and accessible storage throughout - our typical HLK level of quality and function. The slick linear island lighting, full height backsplash, extra thick waterfall island top and hood custom fitted around the bulkhead, all add to this carefully crafted space.

The opposing wall -yin to its yang - is home to a pocket doored, interior lit coffee bar, beverage fridge, second sink, large screen TV and an incredibly appealing black wall tile that I can't take any credit for. Thank you C and J!

Definitely worth seeing more pics of this space (thanks to Caleb for posting his reel a little while back). Clean lines and repeated finishes, no more, no less, that’s all that’s needed to keep this kitchen in balance with the beautiful architecture of this new home.

Backstory of this project, in a nutshell - century stone farmhouse desperately in need of repair, hard working couple (emphasis on the hard working), inspired to take on the task. They’ve got wonderful collectibles, charming little dogs and an appreciation for beauty, especially when it’s aged. What you'll see in these photos is our contribution to their spectacular restoration project. This used to be the dining room, now it’s a very workable combination of old and new and some in between.

This project started with two requests: Make it durable and make it feel as large as possible. With inspo pic in hand (as I've said, collaboration makes for the best projects) we set out creating what turned out to be a beautifully tailored, family and pet-friendly space that can withstand whatever active adults, super energized kids, cats, dogs and pigs can throw at it.
The finish is rift sawn white oak, custom stained and top treated in an antiquing detail to downplay any blemishes that might occur. Simple vertical cut doors add just enough texture to create interest and height with no horizontal surfaces to clean. soapstone tops and backsplash add depth and can withstand heat.
Guest friendly cottages always benefit from a coffee/bar zone. This one is complete with paneled fridge, lit cocktail glass and liquor storage and small undermounted sink. The bar is located on the far end of the space to keep thirsty people out of the working zone.
Pantry and microwave separate the bar from the business area. Lots of drawers and pullouts are included for maximum storage. A corner pullout leaves no space wasted. The fridge is integrated into what used to be a pantry area. Matching panels skin the walls around it, integrating it with the kitchen while keeping the space looking large.
