Using exposed joinery creates contrast in furniture design and communicates that a piece is handcrafted. Bridle joints can be a big win in a lot of scenarios as they are relatively straightforward, incredibly strong and look beautiful.

Some details from a recent chair design. Also, here’s an internet monologue.

Last year, an 85 year old gentleman came in to my studio and asked to have a single chair repaired. It was a beautiful chair from the 60’s. Him and his wife bought the chairs the year they got married. It was still their daily driver at the dinner table. It meant a lot to him.

Me and my wife bought a set of chairs 5 years ago from a big store. Our first set of chairs! Last week, one of them disintegrated. I know what you’re thinking: “Sam, fix the chair! You’re a furniture maker!”

I can’t fix the chair. It’s not a fixable piece of furniture. It’s hot garbage. It’s on the curb right now because it’s garbage day today.

This feller literally wanted to die with his dining set in tact. “It’ll last longer than I’ve got left” - Good Quality Chair Guy

It’s just stuff, I get that. But stuff can have meaning too. Give it some thought next time you’re walking through that big ass parking lot to some place that sells stuff that breaks.
