Ukrainian Jewish Dialogue of Montreal

Ukrainian Jewish Dialogue of Montreal The Ukrainian-Jewish Dialogue of Montreal started with a conversation between Dr. Victor C. Goldbloom and Professor Roman Serbyn, our long-time co-chairs.

The Ukrainian-Jewish Dialogue of Montreal is a group of friends who meet regularly in order to build and strengthen mutual understanding and support between the Ukrainian and the Jewish communities. We honour these principles of dialogue:
• Dialogue encourages an honest exchange of ideas in an atmosphere of respectful consideration.
• Dialogue relies on active listening.
• Dialogue facilitates wo

rk on mutually agreed upon community projects.
• Dialogue never seeks the conversion of the other. Over the last ten years the conversation has expanded into two significant community events, one in 2010 and one in 2015, both held at the Jewish Public Library.

2010: The Aid of American Jews to Famine Victims in Ukraine in 1921-23

A scholarly lecture was given by Dr. Roman Serbyn on the work of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee during a draught-caused famine in southern regions of Ukraine. What was remarkable was that the AJJDC helped all Ukrainians regardless of their ethnic origin or religion. This lecture was accompanied by a photo exhibit documenting the American aid work. The exhibit was put together by Alexandra Hawryluk. The poster for the event was designed by Olena Lytvyn.

2015: The Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Conference

Dr. Andrii Krawchuk, the leading authority on the social ethics of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky, the head of the Ukrainian Catholic Church during both the Soviet and the Nazi invasions of Ukraine during World War II, spoke about Sheptytsky’s high regard for Judaism, his saving of Jewish children and his condemnation of both Nazi and Communist regimes. Dr. Ihor Shchupak, Director of the Holocaust Centre in Dnipro, Ukraine talked about his perception and admiration of Sheptytsky, the work of the Tkuma Research Institute especially its inter-faith dialogue program and the new friendship of Ukrainians and Jews in Ukraine.

70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Night of the Murdered Soviet Yiddish Writers

This event honours through poetry and music some of the Soviet Union's most important Yiddish writers, murdered 70 years ago.

On August 12, 1952 - 70 years ago - Peretz Markish, Itsik Fefer, Dovid Hofshteyn and many other Yiddish writers of their generation were executed in a Soviet prison, silencing some of the most vibrant and intelligent voices of the Yiddish world. This event honours the memory of these murdered writers by telling their stories through a moving performance of poetry and music.

Participants include Pinchas Blitt, Raizel Fishman Candib, Esther Frank, Lazer Lederhendler, Bronna Levy, Henri Oppenheim, Janie Respitz, Sebastian Schulman and Rivka Augenfeld.

This event is sponsored by The Yetta Chmiel Feldman Endowment Fund, The Chana Gonshor Endowment Fund, The Hella Holtzman Endowment Fund, The Etta Michtom Miransky Endowment Fund and The David Zisman Endowment Fund.

Produced in collaboration with Montreal Workers Circle, Klezkanada, and The Ukrainian Jewish Dialogue of Montreal.

The Ukrainian-Jewish Dialogue of Montreal (UJDM) condemns Russia’s unprovoked war against the
peaceful, sovereign state of Ukraine and its people.

Mr. Putin’s vile assertions that he wishes to “denazify” Ukraine to prevent atrocities are baseless
excuses to invade a peaceful, democratic state and to murder innocent people. His outrageous lies are
shameful ploys to enable his genocidal agenda in Ukraine, to hide his war crimes, and to demonize
Ukrainians. His false allegations also diminish, traumatize, and threaten Holodomor and Holocaust
survivors.

It is no accident that approximately 200,000 Jews live in Ukraine today, or that its inspiring, heroic
president is a Jewish descendent of Holocaust survivors. Ukraine is building a modern nation where
diverse ethnicities, religions, races, and cultures can co-exist in peace.

UJDM was co-founded in the mid-1980s by Dr. Victor Goldbloom and Professor Roman Serbyn at a time
when Ukrainian and Jewish communities in Canada were frequently estranged. We began to build
positive relationships which have grown to include mutual admiration, respect, and support for one
another. In its modest way, our friendship circle exemplifies what has been done on larger scales in
Canada and in Ukraine.

We, the members of UJDM, stand together in unity, in friendship, and in solidarity with our communities
in Canada and Ukraine. We are heartened by the support of our governments, institutions, and fellow
citizens. We urge all people everywhere to continue to stand up, to speak out, and to act in defence of
Ukraine’s democracy.
