Manon the teacher had this project picked out for me tonight. She predrilled the frame for handles and had all the supplies ready to go. She didn't forget one thing.
1. We started by sanding the frame lightly, for the chalk style paint to stick to the best of its ability.
2. We chose an off white chalk style paint for the frame. Using long gentle strokes we lightly applied a thin layer of the paint. Three coats
3. Starting with the reverse image - image on the underside of the glass, we cleaned the glass with windex.
4. We applied a new decal that surprisingly had a fabric layer on it. Using black chalk style paint we firmly dabbed it into the stencil. After the second layer we removed it and found that the paint did not go through very well! We removed all remnants and started over with a spray adhesive on a stencil. Two layers of the black paint and presto! After that dried we applied two coats of the chalk white. First from side to side the from top to bottom. It gave a material fabric type finish. Very nice!
5. Lightly sanded the frame down to the old metallic gold. This gives a worn look.
6. Used antique glaze to age the frame, very difficult task. I must remember to put on thick and small amounts at one time. You need to wipe it off before it dries.
7. Insert glass into frame
8. Attach handles, tighten
9. Tack backen on with tack hammer and tack nails
10. Apply vinyl fabric to finish the back off, and give it little feltek feet!
11. Take pictures!
