What is a toddler clock and why use one?
⭐️ Toddler clocks help to visually teach your child when it’s time for sleep and when it’s time to wake.
⭐️ They're helpful in improving early wakings, bedtime battles and middle of the night wakings.

When should I introduce one?
⭐️ 2 years of age or older is a good time to start using a toddler clock.
⭐️ If you feel like your 18-24 month old would understand and benefit from it, there's no harm in starting earlier. It may just take them a bit more time to grasp the concept.

How can I successfully introduce a toddler clock?
⭐️ Involve them in the process of choosing and setting up their clock. Explain how it works and let them choose which colour means it’s ‘okay to wake’.
⭐️ Explain what to do if the clock doesn’t say it’s “okay to wake” - lie still, let your body rest, try to fall back to sleep, mom or dad will come and get you as soon as the clock says it’s okay to wake.
⭐️ Make it part of their bedtime routine. It takes time for toddlers to buy into the concept, so really talk it up and use it consistently each day.
⭐️ Don’t make them wait too long for the reward of seeing the clock change - they will lose patience. If you want to start teaching your toddler to wake up later than they are, start with just 10 minutes and gradually increase the waiting time every few days.

Time baby’s first nap based on when you WANT them to wake up in the morning, not when they actually DO wake up.

What does this look like in practice? Let’s use a common 6-month old 3 nap schedule as an example, with 2-2.5 hour wake windows:

- Wake @ 7AM
- Nap 1 @ 9-10:30AM
- Nap 2 @ 12:45-1:45PM
- Nap 3 @ 4:15-4:45PM
- Bedtime @ 7:15PM

If baby wakes up at 6:30AM, you will still want to hold their first nap at 9AM, even though it’s stretching their first wake window an extra 30 minutes.

Why? Because if you time their first nap based on when they wake up, and they are waking up earlier than you’d like, you are reinforcing the early waking with an early nap and early bedtime - and that will make it really tough to ever get to your desired wake time. Keeping to a 9AM nap will help keep the rest of their schedule in tact, and keep bedtime from creeping earlier and earlier, which will result in earlier and earlier morning wakings.

The extra 30 minutes awake can be tricky for your 6 month old and they may be a bit cranky. Try to find ways to distract them and keep them entertained until it’s time for their first nap at 9AM.

If baby wakes up at 6AM, for example, it may be really difficult for them to make it to 9AM at that age. So in this case, consider adding 30 minutes to their first wake window and another 30 minutes to a subsequent wake window to get back on track.

Swaddle ➡️ Sleep Sack
• When: Once baby rolls from back to belly or shows signs of being on the verge of rolling, it’s time to get rid of the swaddle.
• Why: It’s not safe for a baby that can role be swaddled, as it makes it difficult for them to maneuver out of an unsafe or uncomfortable sleep position they may find themselves in once mobile.
• How: Removing the swaddle can be a scary transition for parents. It’s usually around the 3-4 month mark, where you’re finally starting to get into a bit of a sleep rhythm. You worry about making changes that will negatively impact sleep, especially when you keep hearing about the dreaded upcoming 4 month sleep regression. I promise it’s not as scary as you think. There are a few ways you can approach the transition out of the swaddle:
1️⃣Cold turkey - straight into a sleep sack on night 1.
2️⃣ Gradually - one arm out for a few nights, both arms out for a few nights with swaddle wrapped snug around upper body, then into sleep sack.
3️⃣ Time based - use one of the above approaches for their first stretch of sleep. Each night keep them in the swaddle longer and longer.
• With any transition, it can take a few days to adjust, but your baby is smart and adaptable and will learn to sleep well in their sleep sack the more practice they get.
• If your baby is rolling but their startle reflex is still strong, you may want to consider using a transitional item like the . I personally have never used this product, but I have heard it’s great!

Although your newborn baby can’t talk to you, they can communicate with you and tell you when they’re ready for sleep through their sleepy cues.

🥱 Look out for these signals from your baby. You’ll want to start getting them ready for sleep in the “I’m Getting Tired” stage to avoid an overtired baby. When a baby is overtired, their body goes into overdrive mode and then it can be more difficult for them to fall asleep.

🥱 Not every baby will display every sleepy cue, so pay close attention to the signs your baby gives you when they are ready for sleep.

🥱 Once your baby graduates from newborn status (3 months), their sleepy cues become less reliable and following wake windows is the best way to avoid an overtired baby.

Sleep regressions are common from birth to toddlerhood. All children are different but they are most commonly noticed at 4 months, 8 months, 12 months, 18 months and 2 years of age
🔘 Sleep regressions often look like more frequent night wakings, shorter naps, and/or resisting sleep all together
🔘 Sleep regressions are typically a result of mental or physical developmental leaps (progressions). It’s very important to give your child lots of time to practice their new skills and abilities as much as possible during the day, so they are not as inclined to want to practice at night.
🔘 Stay consistent with your routines and schedule and do your best to avoid creating any new sleep crutches during this time
🔘 Sleep regressions typically last between 2-6 weeks so just hang in there! If sleep does not improve, I can help!

I always recommend sleep sacks to parents I work with if their child is still sleeping in a crib. Sleep sacks are great for so many reasons. Here’s why I’m a BIG fan of them:
• Acts as a cue for sleep 〰️ Little ones thrive on consistency and predictability. They will come to learn that when their sleep sack goes on, it’s time for sleep.
• Offers comfort all night long 〰️ Up until one year of age, it’s recommended to keep loveys out of the crib, but the sleep sack is a safe way to offer your baby some snuggly comfort.
• Keeps legs from getting stuck in slats 〰️ it can be startling or uncomfortable when babies get a leg stuck in their crib bars. Wearing a sleep sack reduces the likelihood of this happening.
• Makes climbing out of the crib difficult 〰️ we want to keep our toddlers in their cribs as long as we safely can. A sleep sack makes it difficult for them to swing their legs over the crib and climb out, so they can safely stay in their cribs longer.
• Provides warmth in colder seasons 〰️ it isn’t safe for babies under one year of age to sleep with a blanket. Just like us though, they like to feel cozy when they sleep, so a sleep sack can help with that.

“Never wake a sleeping baby” is advice you’ve likely heard as a parent - but I disagree! Here are 4️⃣ good reasons to wake your sleeping baby:

1️⃣ Wake a sleeping newborn every few hours to eat, day and night, until they’ve reached their birth weight or as directed by their paediatrician.
2️⃣ Wake a sleeping baby from a 2 hour nap in order to build sufficient sleep pressure for their next nap or bedtime, and to preserve night sleep.
3️⃣ Wake a sleeping baby from a 2 hour nap to eat. We want them to take in as many calories as possible during the day, so they can sleep in longer stretches at night.
4️⃣ Wake a sleeping baby in the morning if they reach your desired wake time. Sleeping in can throw off their day and can negatively impact naps and night sleep.

At 3-4 months of age, most babies are taking 4 naps throughout the day.

👉🏼Aim for about 6.5-7 hours of awake time throughout the day and about 4.5-5 hours of sleep across the 4 naps.

👉🏼Cap a single nap at 2 hours to ensure you’re little one is taking in enough calories during the day, to help them sleep in longer stretches overnight.

👉🏼Bedtime has likely started to move earlier than the late newborn bedtime they had before.

👉🏼If you haven’t yet, start a daily routine about 30-45 minutes before bedtime to help signal to your baby that it’s almost time for bed.
