Our Story
About me
I got my start in woodworking with Forbes Restoration in Halifax. Working for the late Hal Forbes, I learned a lot about the importance of proportions in design. While there, I created a lot of very ornate Victorian millwork and brackets, doors, windows, and some custom cabinetry which I would also install. The shop was a great environment for me to ‘play’ in and I was able to teach myself a lot of different woodworking techniques through experimentation in my off hours.
While I was with Forbes, I was becoming increasingly aware of the state of Nova Scotian forests and more concerned about where and how we get our lumber. Combined with the urge to leave the city and become more self-sufficient, I took a job at Windhorse Farm, an eco-minded business, as the wood shop manager. I moved to the farm with my family and started in the woodshop doing a lot of new and interesting work which included the sourcing and milling of logs, the drying of the lumber in the onsite kiln and then the processing of this material into a variety of products such as flooring, wall paneling and acoustic guitar soundboards which I also graded and sold.
When we had breaks from those jobs, I had time to design and build furniture for the rental cabins and other venues at the farm. Visitors of the farm became interested in what I was doing and before long I found myself doing a lot more custom furniture, cabinets and countertops than any of the other stuff. After a few years as woodshop manager, the owners gave me the opportunity to operate my own business in the shop and I continued there for a few more years, honing my skills and expanding my portfolio while also building a home for my growing family in Middle Cornwall.
