New apprentice coming soon! Beyond excited to meet our firstborn child. Only a few more weeks to go 🙂

Building a sculpted rocker has always been a bucket list project, and there was no time like the present. Looking forward to seeing my wife rock our little one to sleep in the rocker. More pics coming soon...

It's cutting board season once again. I've got a small handful of cutting boards available for anyone that may be interested in a hand made gift. A mix of end grain butcher block style and some more simple cutting boards. Most are approx. 10-1/2" x 16", with one small fella at 8" x 11".

Please message me if you are interested.

Recently completed this reception desk for . The base was made from some furniture from the former church that's now been renovated and turned in to a stunning wellness facility.

Quite the transformation for the church furniture to go through, but great to see it live on. Good to go for another few decades.

Photos never quite capture the beauty of curly maple, but it is wonderful stuff!

Hand carved canoe paddles I made back in October. These are made from Cherry and Ash with a resin fibreglass tip. They are a matched set. The cherry paddle was a gift for my best man and the ash was for me.

Custom side table and matching entryway bench in ash and black walnut from last year. A relatively quick project for a good friend.

The legs have a subtle taper to them but the outer faces remain 90 degrees to the top. I really like the raised section on the upper rail too, kind of makes the top look like they're floating.

Carved wooden seats from a recent build.

Starting with some thick stock, I made pilot holes to tell me when to stop carving away material. Once the bulk of the material was removed I used a gouge to smooth things out and remove the lumps/bumps. After that, it was just chasing the layout lines around the edges to create the edge profile of the seat with a spokeshave. Breaking down the process in to small steps made it pretty easy.

Definitely a time consuming process but very rewarding once complete.

A little throw back to last year when I made this canoe paddle. That was a first for me and it was definitely cool to take it around 100km through on its first trip. We spent a week in the Barron Canyon area of the park and it was a beauty. Even if I lost my glasses in a lake and had a day in the park and an 8hr drive without them... Haha.

Definitely looking forward to making a few more paddles to see what I like best on our trips. I would like to experiment with some kind of resin tip on the blade. It definitely got a little beat up from leaning on it to get in/out of the canoe, pushing off shore, rocks, etc.

Recently(ish) completed white oak side table. Looking back, I guess it's been a while considering the amount of snow... 🥶

This is a relatively simple piece, so I added the mitred dovetails to give it a little more visual interest. Thick white oak definitely gave my dovetail saw a workout, but it was lots of fun. The dovetails are also incredibly strong and well suited for a joint like this where there's nothing else holding the sides together.

This was the first piece of 2022. There's definitely a few more to come.

I keep forgetting to share this project from December of last year, so here it is.

This garden bench has been in my fiance's family for somewhere between 20-30 years and needed some TLC. All the slats were replaced with white oak that are a fair bit thicker than they used to be (an inch finished if I recall correctly). The curved top rail presented some challenges, but a quick scribe off the cast iron, some bondo and I had a pattern.

I also mixed some white titanium pigment in to the oil to provide a bit of extra protection against the elements (0.5% by weight). This gave a nice and subtle white wash and should help to fend off the grey sun bleached look a little longer.

A good scrub down, some new paint and hardware and it's good as new (possibly better). Here's hoping it gets to see another 20-30 years.

First time with mitred dovetails turned out to be a success. This is how they looked after flushing things up and a quick wipe of mineral spirits to get an idea of how the joint would look with finish on it.

This piece is a console table made from white oak. Because it will be a fairly straightforward case with only 3 sides and no structure underneath, the dovetails add considerable strength. They look pretty nice too, in my opinion.
