An important tariff change is coming September 8 — but there’s one distinction the Canadian furniture industry needs to understand: 🇨🇦
Shipping from the U.S. does not necessarily mean made in the U.S.
Canada’s new counter-tariffs of 15%, 25% and 50% apply to specified U.S.-origin goods, including certain furniture and home furnishings.
But country of origin matters. 🌎
A rug made in India, a table made in Vietnam or a chair made in China does not automatically become U.S.-origin simply because it ships to Canada from an American warehouse.
Before assuming an order will be subject to an additional tariff, two things need to be established:
→ Country of origin
→ HS tariff classification
There is also important transitional treatment for certain goods already in transit to Canada when the new measures take effect on September 8.
