A few weeks ago, we were at our local waste transfer station - the place in our community where we bring our trash and recycling. As we waited in our vehicle for our turn to access the disposal bin, we watched a variety of county citizens empty their car trunks, utility trailers and truck beds of its contents - household garbage. It was an amusing scene to behold. Beyond our windshield, we saw hardworking folks discarding drywall and carpet from remodeled rooms in their home, shingles from their repaired roof, and furniture - a whole load of broken furniture. This load was the most amusing of all and the vision in front of us sparked a conversation. You see, this load of furniture really didn't look very old, but it was useless, since it was broken beyond repair. Furniture made from particle plywood doesn't have a reputation for longevity. Anyway, we wondered, how many years it would take for a piece of Swan Creek Furniture to make its way from our our customer's homes to the landfill. First, we shuddered at the thought and then we tried to figure it out. Somebody suggested 1,000 years and while we thought it was easily possible, it was recommended that a modest conjecture was necessary. So, we settled on a prediction of 300 years.

This pine dish dresser and buffet turned out spectacularly. Our customers desired a cabinet that would fit in their kitchen which is filled with cast-iron cookware, crockery, wooden bowls and utensils, and antique dishes. It's a kitchen that serves up wonderful pioneer recipes - good country cookin'. Swan Creek came up with a design that spoke of by-gone years, simpler times, and would also adequately display and store our clients' items. But the cabinet needed to have a convincing antique finish. To achieve an historic look, we used a multi-step process, a process that in itself is antique. The finish, coupled with various distressing techniques and authentic iron hardware, achieved a stunning result that we at Swan Creek Furniture and our customers are very, very pleased with.

This beautiful bed was made by Swan Creek Furniture for a very special customer, a wonderful little girl who was born with a condition that will make her life difficult and challenging. She is going to have to rely on the help and support of the folks close to her as she faces the many obstacles ahead, but she is already off to a great start since she is blessed to have such loving and courageous parents.

When we sat down to design this special, modified bed for her, we decided that it had to be more than functional and safe, but it had to be pretty and charming, deserving of the precious child who would rest on it. We wanted the front rail, which can be easily lowered to provide easy entrance into the bed and then easily raised to accommodate safe and secure sleeping, to look natural and appealing rather than like a modification, after all "Little S" would be hosting her siblings and little friends in her bedroom someday and her room should look as normal as possible. The curves, post finials, panel beading and painted finish with its distressing made this creation fit for a princess, which to all of us who know her believe she is. When Swan Creek's delivery guys completed the setup in "Little S's" room, they had the privilege of sitting with her on her new bed and enjoy the smile that spread across her face. Wow! that was a extra-special moment!

At Swan Creek Furniture, we have often said that our satisfaction in our trade often comes when our projects are completed. That's when we step back, admire the fruit of our labour and realize that we have just created beautiful furniture that will service individuals and families for generations. But sometimes our gratification gets an extra boost when we deliver our customers' orders and place them in their homes. This order, prompted a response that made the delivery extra special. You see, there is nothing better for us than hearing from our customers that our creations are exactly what the customer had in mind - exactly what they envisioned and dreamed. And these folks conveyed that numerous times with words and beaming smiles. It felt really good hearing their compliments as we carefully carried the pieces into their house, through the hallways and then placed them on their final space of service. So, the combination of our personal satisfaction in doing our best at creating, and our customer's complete satisfaction in their purchase, makes what we do at Swan Creek Furniture very rewarding. Here's a project that is well on its way to completion. We thought that customers who appreciate custom furniture would want to imagine this fine hutch & buffet finished in a colour of their choice. At Swan Creek Furniture we use Homestead House Paint Co. milk paint products. This pine/hickory cabinet will soon be finished using Laurentian Blue milk paint with a walnut oil stain, but there are many other colours to choose from. Take a moment to examine the colour palette and then "paint" the unfinished cabinet with your favourite pick using your creative mind. Once finished, you will have just completed one important step in making your ownership of a beautiful piece of Swan Creek's furniture a reality.

This wall bed turned a spacious and cozy family room into an instant bedroom. Our customer envisioned the bed being used by her grandchildren for Christmas sleepovers and summer vacation stays once the unit was completed and installed. The side bookcases would eventually be filled with children's story books (great for bedtime reading!) and games. Each drawer features a hidden pullout shelf that we imagined would hold the popcorn bowl during the "Movie Night at Grandma's". And, when the kids have gone home and peace and quiet has returned to the house, the instant bed effortlessly disappears. Of course, Grandma's life is also filled with adult family and friends who enjoy visits with her by the fireplace or around the pool table. The attractive bed panels create a beautiful backdrop for an evening of entertaining.

The worlds of 21st century electronics and antique reproduction furniture rarely co-exist, but since electronics are a huge part of our lives today, an effort does have to be made to make that co-existence possible. Flat screen TVs with their audio systems can look out of place in rooms that are graced with period and antique furniture. But with a little thought, a design that complements both worlds can be achieved. This TV console, which will support a large flat screen, wide speaker and satellite receiver, was designed to accompany other antique reproduction furniture pieces in a lovely lake-side cottage. When everything was in place the modern devices and the painted console didn't look awkward - they looked very nice together. (Barn Red milk paint)

Warm hospitality begins at the door of a home and hall trees stand ready as hosts welcome their guests into their houses. As visitors enter and shed coats and hats, the hall tree holds their garments from arrival until departure. The hall tree pictured here does that, of course, but it also adds a really nice touch of style and colour to the room. It hangs conveniently on the wall without taking up any floor space. This paneled hall tree is an attractive backdrop for a foyer even when it stands empty. But it's not just intended for the guests. Everyday its a handy place to hang your purse, sweater, or ball cap. Swan Creek's customers order furniture to store all sorts of items and most of them prefer their furniture have solid wood doors and walls that keep their possessions hidden, out of sight and protect them from the potentially harmful effects of light. But some folks want their furniture order to do the complete opposite - show off the contents inside. Contents like lovely serving dishes that families have appreciated and put to use generation upon generation. Maybe the items are valuable or delicate and must only be appreciated while looking through a transparent, glass barrier. Or, it could be the displayed contents have a sentimental value and the furniture provides a space so the memories connected to the items can be easily stirred.

This wall hanging curio cabinet was built to do just that. The challenge for us was to make the glass panes as large as possible while still incorporating our traditional building methods. The wood and the paint (Cathedral Taupe) were all necessary and an attractive design was important, but the design was to bring the focus to what would be placed inside. When it was completed, the cabinet was rock solid (thanks to the mortise and tenon joints!) and the customer had large glass panes to place her keepsakes behind - not only on the front, but the sides as well. The corbels on the bottom and the moulding on the top finished this piece beautifully. Fastening it to the wall was quick and simple with the use of a French cleat. And, we have to say it - our happy customer has informed us that the cabinetry gets a fair amount of attention as well.

A few weeks ago, we completed a project for a family - a busy family. The project was needed to help the folks get parts of their home organized. It wasn't our most glamorous, or impressive job (it was nice, however, a photo won't be posted on this page!), but it was fulfilling to see that our creations benefited the family so much. The series of shelves and coat racks we built in their basement cleared up valuable floor space in various rooms around the house and gave the folks opportunity to categorize and organize their stuff. When we called them a few days after finishing the work to see how their completed project was working out for them, they were pleased to inform us that the nearly 50 feet of shelving and racks were completely filled!

Well, we all need items in our life to help us stay neat, tidy and organized. Some items just get more attention than others, like this dresser with its many drawers (which made it onto our page!). It stores a lot of clothes and divides them up into nice categories. Okay, maybe it doesn't have an impressive 50 feet of shelving, but it is its appearance that gives this dresser the privilege to stay out of the basement and serve in the bedroom.

Summer footwear is a breeze. Slip on sandals and flip-flops. No hands required. But winter footwear is a different story. Before venturing out into the world of slush, snow and ice, we must bend over and lace up, buckle up or zipper up our boots and shoes. It is the time of year when a person comes to appreciate the help of a foyer bench. With a flip up lid, it handily stores items that might be worn on the head, around the neck, or on the hands. But the foyer bench is best appreciated when resting one's backside down on the top while preparing the feet for the season's harsh elements. And it works just as well while taking the footwear off.
