For Edgardo Esparza, poetry has been much more than a creative outlet. It's been a way to survive and make sense of difficult experiences, from grief to addiction to coping with an acquired brain injury. It also allowed him to speak for those who society often seems to silence.

Today, Edgardo lives at our Bridgeport Road building in Kitchener, where he's found the peace and stability to focus on his writing.

Writing under the pen name Gary Rolf, Edgardo has just published his second book, Voices from the Margins: One Man’s Proof of Survival.

“I write about sleeping on the streets, being hungry, but I also write about the good people that I met,” he says.

Look at this artwork! 🎨

These pictures and encouraging messages decorate snack packs that our tenants received through the efforts of Parents For Community Living (PCL), Second Harvest Deuxième Récolte and clothing store UNIQLO.

PCL recently hosted an event where UNIQLO staff packed and decorated approximately 750 snack packs containing granola bars, applesauce, crackers and juice boxes.

The goodies, all provided by Second Harvest, were distributed to programs across the Region that help people who experience food insecurity. We’re so grateful for the work of PCL and Second Harvest, and for the UNIQLO volunteers who gave their time to this project!

Inside, crews are busy installing drywall and finishing mechanical systems. Outside, work continues on stairs, railings, drainage and other essential infrastructure. We're getting closer every day to welcoming 20 families into safe, affordable homes in early 2027.

Big bubbles, big smiles and lots of fun at Village Road! 🫧☀️

Last week, Sue, our Community Support Worker, organized an afternoon of outdoor fun for the kids, complete with volleyball, co****le and snacks.

The giant bubbles were a huge hit!

A small but enthusiastic group of tenants at The Foundry gathered to share a holiday meal on Wednesday. This Thanksgiving, we’re grateful for the people who make Beyond Housing properties feel like home.

Our office will be closed Monday, October 12, for Thanksgiving. Wishing everyone a wonderful long weekend!

On October 3, Beyond Housing friends and supporters travelled through Waterloo Region to see first-hand the homes their generosity, hard work and partnerships have helped make possible. 🚌

It was also a chance to look ahead to an ambitious vision that could more than double the number of Beyond Housing homes over the next five years.

What a beautiful sunny day for our 25th anniversary bus tour! ☀️

Together, we explored Beyond Housing properties in Kitchener, Waterloo, St. Jacobs and Elmira, hearing about the generous support and partnerships that made these homes possible. We also visited the site of a new project on South Street.

We wrapped up with a delicious meal in Elmira, time for fellowship and a first look at something big on the horizon!

For 25 years, Beyond Housing has been working with community partners and supporters to create more affordable homes across Waterloo Region. That includes 14 completed developments and 258 homes, with another 20 homes currently under construction.

Executive Director Dan Driedger spoke to The Woolwich Observer this week about the progress that has been made — and the work still ahead.
