Chef Knife #5 Finally made one I'm truly proud of.
After some trial and error I think I have my technique figured out.

Reclaimed hardened steel set in canary wood, Walnut, oak, asage orange, and mahogany. I actually joined the pieces around the handle to cut down on the need for shims. The neck is capped with reclaimed piano ebony and the pommel with ivory of the same. Finished with Claphams Salad Bowl Finish and polished up to 1200.

Chef Knife #4. Reclaimed hardened steel with full tang pressure fit in sapele, Maple, and reclaimed teak finished with Claphams Salad bowl finish.
The pommel features 100 year old reclaimed piano ivory. This one didn't turn out as nice as I was hoping but still a worthy effort and is available seconds for a heavy discount. On the bright side it set the stage for my 5th effort and one that I'm truly proud of. I'll be posting that shortly.

My neighbor asked me to make some shelving for his store. I ran him through some material options. Reclaimed Cedar boards, teak pallets, recycled knotty pine bed frame etc. In the end I decided to sacrifice a 100 yr old Maple piano I had recently dismantled.

I am so happy I did because the worn antique finish was the perfect canvas to do something I've been experimenting with. Gold spray paint applied sparingly and then quickly wiped with mineral spirits. I next smeared some heavily thinned matte black over top with a rag and scrubbed. The result is this subtle oil spill galaxy looking irredecent mess. The edges that were cut on the table saw also needed to be finished in a way that matched the worn original. So I wiped the surface with silicone and immediately dabbed with Matte black. Silicone and paint don't roll well together and it ends up looking like 100 years of wear. Nailed it.

Check this out! I made my take on a traditional Japanese umm.... letter opener (Tantō). The hilt/sheath is joined sapele and walnut carved out with a pressure fit reclaimed steel blade that I fashioned from an old carpenters square. The inlay is reclaimed ivory and I finished it with my magic blend of non food grade oil based finishing products. I have only sharpened the tip as this is a letter opener however it can be sharpened just incase; that letter contains news of how your army's defeat on the field of battle has brought great shame upon your house.

Knife #3: 10" reclaimed hardened steel Chef Knife.
Full tang pressure fitted into a Sapele and Birdseye Maple hilt. Capped with 120year old reclaimed piano ivory. The Blade features a boat tail shape and a recessed finger notch. I kept the gradients from the 100 year old carpenters square so that next time chef asked for a 3" julienne you can be sure they will get a 3" julienne. Finished with Claphams Salad Bowl Finish.

Very proud of this one. I feel like I have come to the intersection of traditional Japanese Knife asthetics and gutterpunk dumpster dive culture. More to come shortly.

Finished knife #2: 6.5" full tang utility created with reclaimed hardened steel. The hilt is 1 piece reclaimed wenge with a dado fit for the tang covered by a wenge veneer. Inlay work is reclaimed 120 year old piano key Ivory affixed with an ebony plug from the same instrument. The butt also features reclaimed piano ivory. Polished up to 1200 and finished with Claphams Salad Bowl Finish. The balance is almost perfect and the webge veneer is almost completely invisible.

I am quite proud of this one however my Inlay cuts need work. I'm going to give myself a pass as it's o ly my second Inlay attempt.
