An old friend of mine was paralyzed years ago in a mountain biking accident. His sister recently started a GoFundMe to help him buy a power chair. If you donate $25 or more before the end of July, you’ll be entered in a raffle for this charcuterie board I made. Made of 1” thick cherry and measuring 13” x 16”, it has the Halq’emeylem word for “strong” on it.

Kitchen Helper Stool. Painted white with stained steps and back brace.
Fourth and final stool that I completed for the Christmas season. They all turned out better than I expected. But building (and painting) projects like these during sub-zero temperatures in an un-insulated converted car port of a workshop is a pain in the butt. I’ve already told myself that I’ll get a half-dozen built over the summer and have them ready to go for next Christmas season. But I know I’m going to get busy with other projects and I’ll have to build a few more next winter with my space heater blasting.

A huge thank you to .dion for the winning bid and donation, and to everyone else who bid on or shared my board. I decided to top it up with a few of my own bucks to help support the initiative. It may not be much, but it’s a step in the right direction.

BOARD UP FOR AUCTION

Cherry charcuterie board. 9” wide, serving area of 13” long. Image engraved with the permission of Gitxsan artist Michelle Stoney.
With Orange Shirt Day coming up this week along with Canada’s first National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, I wanted to do something to help support the cause. For those unaware, Orange Shirt Day was started as a way to recognize the Residential School System in Canada and all the horrors that were committed upon Indigenous peoples with its implementation.
When Phyllis Webstad was sent to her first day of school at St. Joseph’s Mission residential school, she was excited to have a brand new bright Orange shirt given to her by her grandmother. Unfortunately her clothes, including her orange shirt, were taken from her immediately upon arrival and never returned. It was just one example of the dehumanizing behaviour of the Residential School System in Canada.
When the graves of 215 children were found on the ground of the Kamloops Indian Residential School this past June, Canadians were no longer able to ignore these past atrocities and were forced to confront them head on.
We are all encouraged to wear orange shirts on September 30 as a way to honour the survivors of these school and those who never made it home.

Live edge maple charcuterie board. 12” x 18”. Engraved with Chris Stapleton lyrics.
The grain is crazy on this board. It was an off cut from a kitchen table I made years ago. I finally got around to resanding the board so I could engrave it. Date night at home with the wife will be a little more special with our charcuterie spreads on this thing.
Ps. Anyone have a good recipe for pickled vegetables? Red onion, carrots, cauliflower, whatever.

Still needs some sanding and a finish but the box came together quickly and without issue, not something I can say about most of my projects. This might be the most meaningful piece I’ve ever built so I’m glad there haven’t been any hiccups yet.
For those unaware (and many of my followers on here probably aren’t), I had to put down my dog and the namesake of my little business, Burrows. I’m hoping the opportunity to build him an urn will help me with some closure.

New addition to all pieces coming out of the shop. Indigenous land acknowledgement.
I know things like this can come across as hokey and performative at times, but I figure I should start somewhere. I have a few other ideas for projects that I’m hoping to get to in the summer that will be more actively involved in supporting our local indigenous community.
If you’d rather not have this on a piece you order, just let me know. I will happily leave it off for a $5 donation to the Mémiyelhtel program which works with indigenous youth in the Chilliwack area.
