Hey guys, it's been a while! I finally found some time to get in the shop and made a very limited run of my round serving boards. So if you are looking for a last minute christmas gift send me a message. They will go quickly. I've decided to do local pick up only again this year because of the timing, so sorry to those of you farther away.

Happy holidays to everyone and thanks for the continued support throughout the year!🙂

Here's a little corner detail shot of the gate. There are a couple little 1/8" reveals to give a little bit of interest. Sometimes I feel like a "modern" look tends to ignore little reveals like this and goes for more flat surfaces. In general I like that look, but it is far more difficult to execute at a high level, at least for someone with my skills. With this gate being outside and subject to the changing seasons which cause wood movement (yes, wood moves), that adds a whole other level of difficulty in terms of getting a project to look good not only the day you drop it off, but also years down the road.

Often times understanding the limitations of the materials you are working with can help you make informed design decisions, as was the case here. Did all that make sense? If not, fire me a dm and I'd be happy to answer any questions🙂

Only took a few pictures of this gate as I built it, and no video. Sometimes I just get in a rush to get things done when I have a super long to-do list. At the end, after everything is all done and installed, I always regret not taking more photos and more video along the way. Maybe I will learn someday. Anyone else do this too?

I did get a few detailed shots however that I'll be sharing with you over the next few days.

Anyone else have a really hard time creating a logo for themselves? I agonized over it for a long time. I ended up coming up with this a few years ago and have been using it since. It's simple and clean and I don't mind putting it on the face of smaller projects. I generally try to hide it somewhere though. I put it front, dead center, of my magnetic key hook organizer though. I thought it added some interest to an otherwise plain piece of wood. Do you agree? Link in bio.

IDEAS // so it's that time of year again where I start to think about making some items for Christmas. This year has been a bit of a strange year and it has me questioning what I should make this year, for no other reason than it's been different. The past few years I have made serving boards and I will probably make a batch this year as well, but am thinking maybe I should try something different as well? What do you think? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if you want to see how I make my boards and make some yourself, I have a link in my bio to my YouTube page where you can find me making one of these boards. They are all completely unique, but the process is essentially the same. Thanks for watching!

This is my go to glue. III. I use it for almost everything. Woodworking is hard so I like to simplify when I can. It works great for almost all applications other than the harshest of conditions, which it still does quite well. If you want to have only one glue in your shop, this is it. Who else uses this glue for everything? And how about an applicator brush? I only use one when I need to get into tight spaces or just want to put a limited amount on. Otherwise I just smear it on with my finger😋. For the full build video, Link is in my bio🙂. Oh, and none of this is sponsored.

Some little details // I didn't plan on having rounded corners on this box lid but when the time came I thought it would look good with the holes that were carved into it. I like having a plan, but I am always flexible on little things like that. They often end up being details that stick with me. Does anyone else build like this?

The process for how I rounded the corners and got the lid to fit are in my full YouTube video that you can check out. Link is in my bio!

Thanks for watching🙂.

I have been getting a lot of questions about the finish I used on this box it's called "Tried and True Original Wood Finish." Its an oil and wax blend that has no VOC's or chemical driers and is food safe. You have probably seen it before if you have been following me for a while as II use this on most of my projects that won't see heavy use. The wax provides a little bit of protection and can be buffed to desired sheen. It seems to go a long way. I have been using the same can for years. I've probably done at least 100 cutting boards with this one small can.

What's you favorite go to finish?

A few of my favorite shots // I usually take a ton of photos of my projects and only have a few that I am really keen on. I'm getting better and having more and more keepers, but it's better to have too many wouldnt you say? How many of you photograph your finish projects? Or do you get a pro in to do it?

If you are interested in how I made this, there is a artisan style video I put together

🔊 shop sounds! I always use the miter saw to rough cut my material to length. Unless of course it is really unruly. In that case I use a circular saw just to play it safe. It goes faster when you use camera tricks too😋. What do you guys use for breaking down material? Do you have a designated ben h for a miter saw?

I was asked by why I added this bandsaw step to my milling process? The reason was that this board had a prety sizable knot it in that caused a prety significant crook in the board (that's a real thing. Look it up 😋). I could have passed it over the jointer a bunch of times and straightened it that way, but thought using the bandsaw would be easier and faster, even though it was an added step. It made sense at the time. I think it still does in hindsight, but as is often the case with woodworking, there is more than one way to do things. Thanks for watching!
