After the heartbreak of pulling the plug on the Dragonfly project, we eleven of thirty households focussed on our abiding desire for intentional community and forged ahead. We identified a promising condo project in Bridgeland being launched by a developer, Providence Developments, who was willing to work with us redesigning our Common Unit. A couple of sweet moments happened when the owner of the
company visited our oldest and then our most physically challenged group member, in order to learn what they needed to make their units workable for them. It was a long wait as we watched the site being cleared, ground broken, foundation poured, walls going up, and cabinets get installed. We had to cool our jets after a major rainstorm last August caused some elevator damage and added about a month of delay, after which our first members finally moved in on Remembrance Day, 2016. Most of us own our units, while we have one non-resident who rents out his unit while coming to take part in many of our events, as do his renters. We also jointly own our Common Unit, which Providence customized for us, and we use that space for potlucks, community meetings, baby showers and business meetings hosted by individual members, and for friends or family members to stay in while visiting Calgary. We are still in early days and finding what works for us. Our recent large events have ranged from our internal Art Show, to a movie night, to a dress-up Oscars night. Some of our group have also been seen ride-sharing, trading child supervision, and walking down the hallway to borrow an egg or some brown rice. Intentional community is percolating nicely here in Dragonstein! In June of 2021, we changed our name to Snapdragon Urban Cohousing.
