Pysanky By Donna: Batik Eggs Pysanky is the ancient art of Batik dying eggs. Beeswax is applied to the egg and the egg is then dipped into dye. This art dates back to 5000-3000 BC.

Pysanky is the art of using beeswax and dye to create a written story on an egg shell. Of course the art form has evolved over time and changed. Today with different types of dye, homemade and aniline, design and colour combinations are endless. The only thing to limit you in this is your own imagination. Most designs come from what I see from my everyday. Patterns and colour combinations are alwa

ys popping into view and I love experimenting with different designs. Lots of mistakes are made but when you get it right, it's just so pretty. I also love being able to have the egg mean something special. Since pysanky comes from the Ukrainian verb pysaty, meaning "to write". Each egg is a written message. Messages of love, hope, desire and well-being are wonderful when given to someone who is important to you. I love making eggs and I love sharing this art with others as well. I am offering a free etching workshop end of May ( details to follow ). You will have to bring an egg that you want to etch. For example. I will be etching a waxed emu egg using a product called Acid Magic ( not a kick back from the 60's haha) Let me know if you are interested. Workshop should be about 1 hour long depending on how many show up and how much chatting we do! :) You are also more then welcome to come and see how it's done if you are unsure about what to etch. I am in Calgary and found an excellent source for white farm chicken eggs- a young farm boy who takes care of the chickens and get to sell the extras. He charges $5 per doz and I've taught him how to pick through for the best pysanky ones and I have had fantastic luck. He can meet you in Airdrie, let me know if you'd like his contact info.
