Last Sunday of summer holidays and floated Legacy to Carseland. Hooked 3 to the boat but wet released them (okay, they shook off as we tried to net them but they were within a rod length so count in our books 😂). Great day spent on the river…back to real reality tomorrow!

With hoot owl restrictions in effect, it was a great chance to do a family float and finally get my mom and dad in the boat. The Chalmers flotilla was super fun! Après float fire and wiener roast got washed out but a down pour but great day with family!

Had a great trip to Montana with my brother Tim and and Shelley. Awesome rivers, great company and hospitality and a few fish too. The boat has a few more love marks on her but it performed very well. Floated about 50 on on the Madison and 40 on the Missouri. Bonus for experiencing July 4th in small town USA too! Can’t wait to go back! The artistic photo credits go to Tim!

Trip to the MT and the Madison for a few days. Salmon flies were just starting but the weather put them off yesterday a bit. Spectacular country although there are a few more love marks on the bottom (like pinball on this river!). Salmon flies are huge and kind of fun to watch! Off to Craiglandia and the Mo for a couple more days before heading home.

Had a great day on the Bow with and Shelly. Floated Policeman’s to Mac and had the river to ourselves all day. River was clearing up nicely and flows were great. Tons of wildlife; 3 martins, pelicans, orioles. Oh yeah, there were some fish too! Ran into and it was nice to say “hi” on the river after following his great drone pics.

A different kind of fly fishing day today. Went to the Trout Unlimited tackle swap, hit up Iron Bow Fly Shop & Outfitters and then some time on the bench. Found this cool gold tinged and shimmery rabbit strips for some bunny leaches and then tied a few stones. Back to the reality of work after a great week off.

The boat made it to its natural environs with a family send off. Definitely note a few tweaks (anchor pulleys and guides will need to be tweaked, oars need a lot more refining and likely narrow the blade a bunch). But Noah ( -yes, irony of my Noah in the first trip of a wooden boat 😂)got the first fish in the boat too. Had some awesome “hellos” from I’ve met here and FB through the build too (Scott from and Steve). A great first trip and many more to come!

Finished the rough shaping of the oars today. Let the saw dust and planing chips fly! Brought them home to do some fine tuning and then glass the blades. Ash shafts with cherry and cedar blades. Have some oak and cherry blanks to laminate on the square tops for counter balance. Got a few tricks up my sleeve for that too! Stay tuned to the end of the week.

Have been researching boat bags all through the build process but today when I went into Iron Bow Fly Shop & Outfitters they had a YETI load out box for 25% off. Was planning on the Fishpond Cutbank but I actually think this is going to work out better… and will be a good field box for waterfowl too! What is everyone else using for boat bags?

A little shop time and a little bench time today. Started the shaping of the oars. About 3 hours of planing and sanding. Learned from the prototype to go slow and be patient. Probably about half done the shaping. Also finished the anchor arm and spent some time on the bench. Size 22 griffiths gnat, size 22 CDC midges and size 6 balanced leaches. Thinking I may ask a friend to borrow oars for the first trip!
