Why are firefighter candidates failing aptitude tests (even after studying hard, buying prep books, taking courses, and using AI tools)?

👉 Because studying harder is not the same thing as preparing properly.

One of the biggest things I see with firefighter candidates is this:

They’re putting in effort, but their preparation process is unstructured. They’re jumping between resources, doing random practice questions, watching videos, using ChatGPT, and hoping repetition alone will improve their scores.

But firefighter aptitude tests don’t reward random studying. They reward strategy, process, consistency, and test readiness.

In this video, we break down:

• Why firefighter aptitude tests require a structured preparation process
• The biggest mistakes firefighter candidates make when studying
• The difference between “studying more” and “studying smarter”
• The 3 core principles of structured firefighter test preparation
• What it actually means to become a test-ready candidate

If you’ve failed a firefighter aptitude test before, plateaued at 65-68% in your test scores, or feel frustrated despite putting in the work, this video will help you understand what’s missing from your preparation.

A Kawartha Lakes firefighter is being recognized after completing an extraordinary 100-kilometre run in full firefighting gear, raising nearly $15,000 for Wounded Warriors Canada programs.

Firefighter Paul Griffin took on the physically demanding challenge this week without taking shortcuts or changing gear, completing the entire distance in full equipment during what organizers described as a gruelling day driven by determination, purpose and strong community support.

According to Wounded Warriors Canada, funds raised through Griffin’s effort will help support training, counselling and mental health services for trauma-exposed professionals, including first responders, and their families.

The organization praised Griffin’s dedication, noting that national support from donors and communities continues to help reduce stigma and improve access to vital mental health care services.

Griffin’s fundraising campaign was supported by the Kawartha Lakes Volunteer Firefighters Association and the City of Kawartha Lakes.

The St. John’s Regional Fire Department (SJRFD) anticipates a Firefighter job competition later this year. We’ll be sharing an updated Recruitment Guide and job advisories in the coming months, but wanted to highlight an important change to the minimum requirements for potential applicants.

Please be advised for the 2026-2027 Recruitment a Class 3 driver’s license will no longer be a minimum requirement; however, successful applicants must provide an updated driver’s license showing their Class 3 within 24 months of their hire date. Obtaining this license, including all associated costs, is solely the responsibility of the employee. The City of St. John’s and the St. John’s Regional Fire Department will not provide or fund any training related to obtaining these endorsements, nor will they cover or reimburse any associated expenses.
