Every piece of furniture I make has a story, this would have to be one of my favourites.
The furniture below was built from a tree that had to be removed to allow for a house extension here in Yass. (All approved). The tree was cut down over 5 years ago and was originally destined for fire wood. Luckily the guy who cut the tree down recognised the fiddleback grain and cut the trunk into slabs, milled, then stored in a shed to dry. In collaboration with my clients, we came up with the following that would get the best results from the timber and family needs: Three 6 seater dining tables, a waterfall console table and a live edge mirror from the slab off cuts. The timber is Blakelyi Red Gum, not usually used for furniture production, but in it’s uniqueness, with some resin to stabilise the drying cracks along with a fair amount of “fiddle back” grain they are lovely pieces of furniture to be handed down for generations.
I really enjoyed this project, especially the joy on my clients faces when they saw the completed pieces for the first time.
