For a while the Collegiate S**g has slowly been growing in Australia and in the last two years things have really taken off! Every year we’re seeing more and more s**g dancers on the social floors and filling competitions. With this in mind we think 2019 is a great time to run what we’re calling The S**g Geek Out, which is a workshop modelled after the very successful “The Balboa Geek Out”. The intention is to provide a local forum and environment for advanced, proactive dancers to share ideas, tips and tricks; to practice and develop together. However being that our scene is still developing we’ll also be bringing in a special guest, Ryan Martin (USA), to run some master classes and assist with the overall event.
Find out below what the event is, if it's for you, and if you're interested, how to apply to attend.
ISN’T IT JUST LIKE A WORKSHOP EVENT?
The format of The S**g Geek Out is a series of group sessions that will be facilitated by two to six people including you if you choose to. These are not classes, but rather workshop-style sessions which will generally require everyone's active participation and input. The environment we want to create is about sharing and discovery, plus socialising and social dancing with other S**g geeks in a relaxed atmosphere.
WHO’S RYAN MARTIN?
Ryan Martin is one of the foremost Collegiate S**g instructors in the world. He’s taught and danced various swing dances for 20 years and in the last 10 years he’s taken a keen interest in the history of these dances, specialising in Collegiate S**g. On top of teaching domestically and internationally he’s also released a feature length documentary called “The Rebirth of S**g”.
Ryan will be running a few master classes over the weekend, providing insight into the history of the dance, and helping facilitate the content of the weekend. We’re incredibly lucky to have his knowledge and passion available to us.
IS THIS FOR ME?
You want to get your dancing on the fast track to success, break through plateaus, be inspired, get new ideas, challenge yourself, get a fresh perspective on your strengths and weaknesses, with the time and help to work on parts of the dance you want to work on. At The S**g Geek Out, everyone will be encouraged to leave their egos outside, be generous with sharing ideas, and accepting of constructive feedback from others. Think of it as a weekend getaway on the scenic Great Ocean Road, with the added bonus of lots of S**g!
INTERESTED…. WHAT NOW?
Get on board! Numbers will be limited to 40 people, so there is an application process. Don’t worry, it’ll be short, fair and conducted sensitively; with a mix of merit-based and lottery-based selection. Participants will be selected as individuals. While we will consider partners, please be aware that we might only offer a place to one person in a partnership. You can apply by using the following Google form: https://goo.gl/forms/b4pqHKN52IOUkdkh1
LOCATION
Right on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. Our venue is a former Monastery and Seminary which is set in beautiful gardens, surrounded by spectacular views of the state forest and a secluded beach just across the road. The main guest-house has a large lounge and dining area, complete with a combustion wood fire surrounded by cozy lounge suites for getting to know your fellow participants better. There’s an awesome sunroom where you can chill in the lounge chairs and take in the spectacular ocean view, or play a game of pool or table tennis. There is a huge kitchen with commercial stoves and ovens - no waiting! - as well as two large fridges, a dishwasher and an island bench the size of a bed! All bedrooms are heated and consist of either single or double bed configurations. The bedding is cozy and warm with extra pillows and blankets if needed, and all linen is white hotel quality.
All workshops and social dancing will take place in the beautiful - and spacious - chapel, with its hardwood floors, stained-glass windows and spectacular views.
DATE
Fri 19th to Mon 22nd July 2019. Venue arrival: Fri 19th July, 6:00pm. Venue departure: Mon 22 July, 10:00am.
COST
For The S**g Geek Out we will be using what we refer to as a “Ceiling Price” approach. What does this mean? Well the maximum price you will pay for this workshop is $280. However the more people that sign up the lower this cost will be. This is a non profit event and we want to pass on the savings to the community. All we’ll require is a $100 deposit upfront and then we’ll let you know the final cost when registrations are finished.
WHAT DOES IT COVER?
Your registration will cover the costs for the workshops and accommodation. As this isn't a fully-catered weekend you'll need to be responsible for the rest of your food & beverages. You can do it alone or team up and cook in larger groups; whatever suits you best. For the non-Melbourne participants, we can sort out ways to get your provisions from one of the nearby towns. If you need help getting from the airport to the event and back let us know and we’ll try sort you out!
If you have any questions at all (big or small) email us at thes**[email protected] or send a message via The S**g Geek Out FaceBook page.
