🔥 June is National Burns Awareness Month
With winter officially here, Aussies are cranking up the heaters, lighting the fire pits, and enjoying more hot cuppas. But did you know that the risk of burn injuries significantly increases during these colder months?
This June, we’re joining Kidsafe Australia to help keep our community safe. Whether it's a kitchen mishap or a campfire accident, knowing what to do can make all the difference.
🛑 Top Tips for a Burn-Safe Winter
The 1-Metre Rule: Keep children and pets at least one metre away from heaters and open fireplaces.
Pot Handles In: Always turn saucepan handles toward the back of the stove so little hands can't reach them.
Safe Bathing: Always run the cold water first, then add hot water. Test the temperature with your elbow before your child gets in.
Campfire Caution: Always extinguish campfires with water, not sand. Dirt or sand traps the heat and can cause severe contact burns the next morning.
đź’§ First Aid: Remove, Cool, Cover
If a burn happens, act fast with these three steps:
Remove: Take off any clothing or jewellery near the burn, unless it’s stuck to the skin.
Cool: Run the burn under cool running water for 20 minutes. This is the most critical step to stop the tissue damage. (No ice, butter, or creams!)
Cover: Wrap the burn loosely with clean plastic cling wrap or a lint-free cloth.
When to call Triple Zero (000):
Seek emergency help if the burn is larger than a 20-cent coin, involves the face, hands, or feet, or if you are concerned. Let’s look out for each other this winter.
