Drought is one of the hardest things to manage when you're on the land. It’s fraught with sacrifice, emotions and trading off hope against reality. When you're in the thick of it, it can be challenging to know when to act. That's why it is so important to have frameworks and decision points established before the rain starts to drop off.

Check out our recent article for some key insights into how Graham Finlayson of Bokhara Plains prepares for drought on his property:

Knowing when to act is the hardest part of a dry spell. See how livestock producers are using stocking rate data and clear decision frameworks to protect their land before things get critical.

"I don't think there's been any other trigger in my life that has caused grown men to cry in front of me than… not following through on the forecasting of stocking rate to carrying capacity."

Bart has sat with countless Australian graziers. He's seen what happens when the numbers weren't tracked and the season turned.

The forecasting tools in Atlas Grazing exist for exactly this. Stocking pressure charts, seasonal scenarios, destocking models. Know what's coming before it's too late to act.

Don't let a dry season catch you off guard. Watch the full webinar here: https://atlasag.com/atlasgrazing/ag-learn/webinar-atlas-grazing-intro-and-features

Andrew Mosely came home to Etiwanda Station in the late 1990s and found a landscape that wasn't holding water, wasn't growing grass and was under serious financial pressure.

What followed was thirty years of trial, error and learning to read 34,000ha of semi-arid country in the Western Division of NSW.

In the latest episode of Stockyard Sessions, he talks through how he more than doubled carrying capacity, why a mix of sheep, cattle and goats changed the business, and what three decades of breeding animals in their home environment has quietly added to the operation.

"What's kept me going is that deep connection to the land. When you start to see it move forward and thrive and respond, yeah, it just makes you so excited."
