Step 6.

Adding the internal sectioning I purchased from Amazon. I did have to make a few minor adjustments to get the size compatible but nothing crazy.

The final part will be the monogramming.
That will require some thought.
Do I hand paint, stencil, transfer or sticker 🤔🤔

Relining the interior of the vintage box with fresh black velvet.
Can I just say... Black velvet is impossible to photograph well.

Crisp!!!

Crisp lines are easy. Use frog tape, wipe it down with a damp cloth and then seal it with clear polyurethane before your paint.

Results speak for themselves.

Step 4.

If you've been following along at home, here's the latest step.

Masking up for some detailing stripes.

Pro tip: when masking, wipe the tape with a damp cloth before you paint. It helps to seal the tape down and reduce paint bleed.

Step 3 on the cutlery box upcycle.

The box has been let dry overnight and coming back to it the next day I could see the lovely depth of colour the black paintwash had created.
I then applied the 1st of 3 final coats of polyurethane sealer.
The 2nd and 3rd pics are straight after application and then when the 1st coat was dry.

This will be left overnight again to harden before I give it a light sand with a 600/800 grit sandpaper and apply the final 2 coats of sealer.

Step One one the Oak cutlery upcycle.

After a thorough wash it was time to sand.
Sanding will remove light scratches and imperfections caused by years of use and even longer being tossed about in storage.
It will also smooth down the rough texture and assist with adhesion for the next coat that gets applied.

And now for something different.

I see a lot of these vintage Flatware boxes and often feel a little sad that such a lovely item in our History has become almost obsolete.
Now we just chuck our cutlery in the top drawer with the rubber bands and that weird curly straw from when the kids were 7.
And the lovely boxes, often made of oak end up at the op-shop and more likely in landfill.

So, I'm going to upcycle this one into something a little more modern and user friendly, so watch this space to see what I do with it
