As Australia’s cities continue to expand, particularly in their outer growth corridors, the challenge of keeping communities connected - both digitally and physically - is becoming increasingly urgent.

Mobile connectivity is no longer a luxury or an afterthought; it is essential infrastructure that supports local economies, public safety, education, health, and social cohesion.

And yet, too often, mobile infrastructure planning remains disconnected from the strategic planning processes that shape our cities.

Local government has a critical opportunity to help shape mobile connectivity outcomes, particularly in greenfield and major redevelopment areas.

Our partnership with the National Growth Areas Alliance is helping to strengthen the knowledge of these opportunities to deliver world-class mobile connectivity in suburban Australia.

Since 1958, the Australian Good Design Awards have celebrated the nation’s most forward-thinking design innovations. Endorsed by the World Design Organisation, these awards are not just about aesthetics - they champion design that solves real-world problems, sets new standards, and drives social, technological, and environmental progress.

Across more than six decades, thousands of designs have been honoured - from sustainable architecture to cutting-edge product design.

Yet, only a handful have ever emerged from the world of telecommunications infrastructure. That’s what makes HUB’s TOWER.NODE achievement in the 2024 Awards is so significant.

HUB’s TOWER.NODE reimagines traditional sports lighting towers by integrating macro telecommunications infrastructure into a single, sleek form. In doing so, it addresses two of the most pressing challenges for growing communities:
• There is a need to replace aging sports lighting assets owned by local councils.
• There is ongoing difficulty in finding suitable, community-friendly sites for critical telecommunications infrastructure.

By merging these two needs, TOWER.NODE isn’t just functional - it’s transformative.

It exemplifies the Good Design Awards’ core values of innovation, quality, sustainability and impact.

As one of the few telecommunications infrastructure designs in the Awards’ history to be recognised, TOWER.NODE signals a turning point. It shows how even the most utilitarian infrastructure can be reimagined with purpose, elegance, and community in mind.

At HUB, we’re proud to contribute to this new chapter in Australian design. The future is not only connected - it’s beautifully designed.

For over 60 years, monopoles have played a critical role in Australia’s power and telecommunications networks. First introduced in the mid-20th century as an alternative to lattice towers, they gained traction in the 1950s and 1960s where space constraints or aesthetics mattered.

The late 1990s and early 2000s saw a major shift toward monopoles, particularly in urban environments, thanks to their smaller footprint, improved aesthetics, and cost efficiency. As mobile networks expanded from 2G to 4G, monopoles became the go-to solution for infrastructure deployment.

Today, the evolution continues.

At HUB, we’re taking monopole design further - integrating multifunctionality, leading technology, and new headframe designs to meet the needs of our growing communities.

As the demands of 5G, the internet of things, and shared infrastructure grow, our innovation in monopoles is shaping the next generation of urban connectivity.

The past 60 years were about transition. The next 60? Transformation.

🚀 New Partnership Announcement

HUB, an Indara company, is proud to partner with the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) to drive better outcomes for Australia’s fastest-growing communities.

This educational partnership will focus on knowledge sharing and strategic collaboration to improve awareness and build capability for delivering digital infrastructure and connectivity across outer metropolitan areas.

By combining NGAA’s deep local knowledge with HUB’s expertise in the public realm and digital infrastructure, we aim to help councils and industry work better together to create more connected and future-ready communities.

We look forward to working with Bronwen Clark and the NGAA team and their members.

👉 Real collaboration. Real impact. Real solutions.

We are continuing to see that local Council's are facing a wicked problem involving two major infrastructure challenges: aging sports lighting and the ongoing struggle for mobile network infrastructure providers to find suitable sites for telecommunications infrastructure.

Traditionally, these have been treated as separate issues - but what if they didn’t have to be?

By integrating macro digital connectivity infrastructure into the design of sports lighting towers, HUB’s TOWER.NODE offers a smarter, more efficient solution.

This approach not only modernises aging lighting infrastructure but also delivers critical 4G/5G connectivity without adding visual clutter or requiring additional sites.

It’s this kind of forward-thinking innovation that earned HUB multiple Good Design Awards in 2024 - recognition of our commitment to designing shared infrastructure that enhances critical services to growing communities.

The future of urban infrastructure isn’t just about upgrading what we have - it’s about redefining what’s possible.

Once a windswept carpark, Parramatta Square has transformed into a dynamic civic and commercial heart. It’s one of Australia’s most significant urban renewal projects.

This thriving precinct is a testament to visionary planning, world-class design, and the importance of investing in high-quality public place infrastructure.

Lighting, street furniture, and quality urban assets don’t just illuminate a space; they activate it. HUB was proud to play a small role in this transformation through our multifunction poles, helping to create a welcoming, safe, and future-ready public realm.

Great places don’t happen by accident. They’re designed with people in mind. As cities continue to grow, so too must the infrastructure that supports them.

Solar-powered lighting is transforming how councils and place asset managers illuminate public spaces. By reducing reliance on grid power, these solutions offer flexibility in deployment, lower operational costs, and enhanced resilience - especially in remote or off-grid locations.

HUB’s solar-powered lighting solutions have been successfully deployed across parks and walking paths throughout Australia, enhancing safety and accessibility while supporting sustainability goals.

With no need for trenching or cabling, councils can quickly and efficiently light up public spaces that matter most to communities.

Shaping Canberra’s Public Spaces

From seating and bins to bike racks and public art, HUB is proud to have played a role in enhancing some of the most used public places in our nation’s capital over many years.

Through close collaboration with artists, consultants, and contractors, our team has helped bring to life a more inviting, functional, and connected public realm - where people can meet, move, and enjoy their city.

Great public spaces don’t happen by accident - they are the result of thoughtful design, quality materials, and a shared vision for how we experience the urban environment.

A big thank you to our project partners for their dedication to delivering these upgrades.

We love seeing our work become part of Canberra’s everyday life. Here’s to more people-friendly, well-designed, and sustainable public spaces!
