This personalised set of acacia coasters is part of a customer’s order that’s just about ready to leave our Sydney workshop — and they’re also one of the first sets to feature our newly refined black inlay engraving process.
Acacia is such a beautiful timber, but its natural variations in grain, colour and density mean that traditional laser engraving can vary across each piece. Rather than accepting that as “just how timber engraves”, we’ve been experimenting with a way to achieve richer, more defined engraving while still allowing all that natural timber character to shine through.
Each design is precision laser engraved directly into the solid acacia before being carefully sealed. We then work a rich black wax into the engraved detail by hand, wipe and buff each coaster individually, and finish them with a protective hard wax.
The result is that gorgeous deep black detail against the warm acacia grain — and because every piece of timber is different, no two coasters are ever quite the same.
And because they're made to actually be used, not just look pretty, we also put the new finish through a water and condensation test before we were happy to send them out. 💧🥃
It adds a few extra steps to what was already a handcrafted product, but we think the difference is absolutely worth it.
