Red Hen Railcar 435

Railcar 435 was built at the Islington Station and began servicing the suburbs of Adelaide on the 30 June 1971. After years of faithful service, Red Hens were phased out and 435 was sold to Yorke Peninsula rail at Wallaroo in 1999. From there it was purchased in 2009, for the Stationmaster’s Gallery by the Aberdeen Park Trust’s Lot 46 group. Andrew Doube and Malcolm Montgomery were instrumental in overseeing the purchase and subsequent funding to prepare it for use.

So it seems fitting that the Gallery housed in the original Strathalbyn Railways Stationmaster’s house built in 1884 should own its own train.

Now completely refurbished and re-purposed, ‘The Red Hen’ has become a quirky studio space available to the public to hire at $5 per hour for artistic endeavours, classes or meetings. The Studio will have a yearly programme of events to satisfy those who would like to learn new skills. For more information please contact the Coordinator on 0434401237
