Don’t worry. I’m not moving into the real estate realm. But I am selling my lovely penthouse apartment in the Southern Highlands. Located in Mittagong, a mere 1 hour and 15 minutes from Sydney and a stone’s throw from my old stomping ground at it has 3 bedrooms, 3 full bathrooms, complete laundry and 2 parking spots. It’s located on the top floor and is possibly the best apartment in the block with an excellent sunny aspect, large balcony and view.

Parking is located right next to the lift, which takes you directly to the top floor and penthouse apartment.

Currently leased, it represents excellent value for someone looking for a Southern Highlands bolthole or investment in an area very close to my heart.

Price guide is $750,000 to $800,000 and represents incredible value.

When I’m on the hunt to find items to bring to you, my dear follower, I am intent on items that are both beautiful and interesting and I think this lovely item fits both categories.

Made in Italy some time during the 1980s by Scanglobe, the amber glow created by this beauty is undeniable. And if you want to brush up on your historical geography this might be perfect! Haha.

There’s an object on our wall that stops everyone who walks past.

In the grasslands of western Cameroon, the Bamileke people developed one of the most visually extraordinary ceremonial traditions in all of West Africa. Their kings — the fons — presided over a culture of remarkable sophistication, and at the centre of their ceremonial life were objects of breathtaking beauty.

The juju hat was one of them. Worn by royalty and figures of high status during festivals and rites, it was a crown, a statement, a declaration of power. Hundreds of feathers, each one individually bound by hand onto a coiled basketry base, radiating outward in a perfect disc. The making of one was itself an act of devotion.

This hat, made from guinea fowl feathers is 78 centimetres across. It dates to around 1965, which means it was made and worn while Cameroon was finding its footing as a newly independent nation — a charged and extraordinary moment in African history.

The feathers are dyed in coral and deep rose, fading at the edges to blush and ochre after six decades of slow, graceful ageing. The back reveals the way it was made — tight spiral coiling, hand-stitched cloth, the quills bound with a patience that is almost unimaginable today.

We have loved it and the shadow it’s cast upon our wall but think it may be time for it to find a new home. If you feel the same pull we do, you know where to find us.
