Joinery is an art of joining the wood.
Cabinet makers have a number of different joints at their disposal and based on the project, they may use fasteners, bindings, adhesives or only wood elements to join together pieces of wood.
Some of the traditional joints are:
☑ Butt joints - the end of a piece of wood is butted against another piece of wood
☑ Lap joints - the end of a piece of wood is laid over and connected to another piece of wood
☑ Dowel joints - the end of a piece of wood is butted against another piece of wood and reinforced with dowel pins
☑ Box joints - a corner joint with interlocking square fingers
☑ Dovetail joints - box joints where the fingers are locked together by diagonal cuts
☑ Mortise and tenon - a stub (the tenon) fits tightly into a hole cut for it (the mortise)
