🪵🌲🌳 A New Year. 🪵🍃🌳

2025 has been a whirlwind of a year for anyone involved in the NSW Timber Industry and unfortunately, the mainstream media attention it has received has been negative, skewed towards an extremist green narrative and continues to pose as a relentless threat to our existence. Christmas will be a difficult time for many, especially those who have faced redundancy and job instability as a result of the logging moratorium on the Mid North Coast. The shadow cast on native forestry by the proposed national Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation laws adds another layer of uncertainty for timber families. However, Christmas is also a time for reflection, gratitude and togetherness. With this in mind, we thought it timely to highlight some positive outcomes for the industry we love.

👉 The Minns Government recently released the findings of the NSW koala baseline survey. The findings are remarkable! The survey estimates that there are 274,000 koalas in NSW 🐨 This survey used advanced technologies such as drones and acoustic recordings. It gave a far more reliable baseline for koala conservation estimates then previous surveys. It was formerly estimated that there were between 15,000 to 30,000 koalas in NSW. Clearly, our existing approach to conservation has something to offer! please feel free to spread the good news!!

👉 The forestry industry has been listed as one of the federal government’s seven essential industries. As part of the Labour Government’s Future Made in Australia campaign, the federal government is promising to add value to the sector through increased support of timber processing and manufacturing. As a consequence, we HOPE to see increased job security and investment within the sector while promoting the sale of **DOMESTIC** product. We also HOPE to see the security that is currently provided to the industry through the Regional Forestry Agreements mirrored in the new Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation legislation. Those within the industry know that the current RFA’s effectively balance the environmental, commercial and social use of forestry resources. The success of the RFAs is a result of outcome focused, transparent, traceable, five-yearly reviews that align with RFA-associated reporting from other states to fulfil national reporting obligations. Additionally and most importantly, the RFAs stipulate a reserve system that conserves over 1 million hectares of state forest and governs the sustainable management of the remainder. We are hopeful that the government will use this gold standard, world-class framework to inform the new EPBC act and the construction of the national Environmental Protection Agency while also consulting the Timber Fibre Strategy that they commissioned earlier in the year. This strategy offers the government science-led industry-backed advice that could further foster the investment and security we hope to see produced by the Future Made in Australia initiative.

🫵 You can have your say on the draft National Environmental Standards! It is open for public consultation until the 28th of January 2026.

Interesting timing, but we will roll with it.

🪵🌳 Disbelief. Frustration. 🐨 🍃

The decision to move forward with the full-size “great" koala national park highlights the city-centric nature of the current political climate in New South Wales. The Chris Minns’ Government has shown that they are labor by name but not by values. The party has ignored science and has hung the Mid North Coast timber industry out to dry by further fuelling public misconceptions on koala populations, forestry practices and the potential benefits of the GKNP.

There is no disputing that koala conservation is non-negotiable but the government has misinterpreted the data. The science has highlighted that koalas benefit from the active management of habitat. The links below demonstrate that forestry employees, logging contractors and harvesters, timber mills and their employees (and lets not forget those employed in sub-forestry industries like timber manufacturing, pulp and paper!) are not the villans here. They do however, make an easy scapegoat for the “green” narrative being pushed by the labor state government and media.

The irony of the GKNP is thick and shouldn't be ignored. Promises of eco-tourism filling the employment and economic hole left by the moratorium imposed on Sunday are empty. In the announcement of GKNP, there was no mention of koala hospitals or roads to bolster tourism and assist these tourists in viewing a koala. The most accessible, cost and time effective way for a tourist to view a koala will remain in the metropolitan areas. Shoot, they might even get a cuddle as well! The threat of hotter and more frequent fires on the highly populated Mid North Coast of NSW is an increasingly likely scenario. Not ideal for koala populations, especially now there are less people to fight them. Alternatives to timber will increase in appeal - supply will be lower and therefore, timber prices will be higher. Plastic will look inviting; think plastic pegs, stakes and pallets while imports of unethically harvested hardwood will further swamp the domestic market.

It is hard not to feel disheartened when the industry that you live and breathe is continually fighting the “green dream”. Especially when the timber industry offers such exciting opportunities for both the environment and the economy. We believe that timber is the ultimate renewable resource.

🍃 The success of Australia’s timber industry and the koala does not have to be mutually exclusive. 🍃

👉 Research conducted by the National Parks and Wildlife Service showed that koala populations are stable and high in actively managed NSW state forests. You can read the report here:https://www.nrc.nsw.gov.au/Final%20report%20-%20Koala%20research%20program%20-%20December%202022%20v2.1.pdf
👉 Research conducted by the Department of Primary Industries showed koalas thrive in actively maintained habitat. You can read the report here:

👉 Forestry that is actively managed has shown the potential to sequester higher amounts of carbon than passively managed parks. Read more here: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC7096156/
👉 Forestry workers are highly skilled in fire technology and prevention methods. They account for 1/4 of NSW statutory fire authorities. The forestry industry feeds a significant supply chain.
