A very rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to play a small part in the construction of this model boat, in collaboration with others.

The model represents the Gallipoli landing boat, the Devanha lifeboat No 5. The timber used was salvaged from one of Australia’s most significant trees — the Lone Pine. It was removed from the Shrine of Remembrance due to fungal infection.

The Lone Pine itself was grown from a seed brought back by soldiers after the battle at Lone Pine Ridge in Gallipoli.

Throughout the making of this piece, there were constant feelings of privilege, honour, and respect — along with moments of reflection on the remarkable journey this timber has taken.

The model will find its final resting place at the Shrine of Remembrance.

It’s been a privilege to restore these original 1930s Thonet bentwood chairs.

The craftsmanship is incredible, featuring complex steam bending and traditional joinery techniques that have stood the test of time.

The original makers created many iconic designs that continue to influence furniture still used today.

From big things, little things appear.

This small piece came from the timber of a dining table that eventually became a bookcase.

The plan was a pedestal using one leg — but curiosity took over, and I split that leg into four instead.

There’s something deeply satisfying about the crisp, clear lines in the finished form.

A George Nakashima–inspired dining table, crafted from salvaged Mountain Ash wide boards and recycled hardwood.

Nakashima’s philosophy has always resonated with me — he believed that by transforming timber into furniture, we give noble trees a second life, allowing their beauty to be appreciated for generations.

His designs are beautifully simple and practical, yet technically challenging.
What speaks to me most is his way of thinking: letting the timber guide the style, shape, and final form.

Even in its new state, the wood continues to live — breathing, expanding, contracting, and slowly releasing its tension. That living energy is what makes each piece unique.

The beauty of furniture restoration lies in the opportunity to study how others have designed, constructed, and finished their creations.

In this piece, the central backboard was broken, which meant the chair needed to be carefully dismantled — including removing the backrest — to fit a newly crafted replacement.

Shaping the new backboard is only part of the process; it also involves colouring the timber with spirit stains to seamlessly blend with the original finish.

By repairing this chair, I’ve played a small part in its story — giving it the chance to continue serving for many more years.

My passion for restoration is driven by a desire to keep traditional techniques and skills alive, and to help reduce the culture of ‘throwaway’ furniture.

I’ve been honoured to work on this special project — carefully dismantling a beautiful 100-year-old dining table and giving it new life as a custom bookshelf.

This table has been part of the same family for its entire century, spending most of its life in Richmond. Although its size made it difficult for anyone in the family to use, the emotional connection was too strong to let it go.

So, together, we decided to repurpose it. By using the original top, rails, and a section of the legs (complete with castors) — and preserving its rich patina — this treasured piece can continue to live on with the family, carrying its history into a new chapter.

My dear friend Beck is going through a cancer journey , which means she hasn’t been able to work for many months. She is an incredible human , humble and supportive to her friends and community.

It’s now a time Beck needs a little support, so if able to donate any amount to help her through this challenging time of her life , it will be gratefully accepted.

Thank you
