So, bit wet here … ☔️ Much at your place?

Forecasting the weather is amazing! If you went on the forecast of YR you’d need a boat but if you used the Elders website everyone would be wearing thongs

We don’t know who actually got it right, most would say Jane Bunn every day of the week. What we do know, is we are currently not grading and haven’t since Sunday

With only two trucks going full time, this does create a bit of a scheduling issue. We will work on that over the next few days and as long as we work weekends - we should have no issues catching up

We appreciate everyone’s patience, it’s happened before and we will get it done!

One month down already!

You’ll see (and hear - waiting on a larger VSD to stop the rattle when empty!) Clay’s grader with an outload auger this year as newer fungicides particularly in the colder months make a big mess with grain sticking to the belt and making a mess on the ground!

Clay’s last trip to Merriwagga this week finishing on some decent size Neo Barley treated with Vibrance @ 3.6L/t and Cruiser 350 @ 1.0L/t applied to seed at Tim McKenzie’s property

The season hasn’t been without some hiccups. Each grader had to have some love from the electricians with the variable speed drive dying on both graders Westrup shaker screens - thankfully both Phil and Clay had finished on a variety and only had to clean down rather than come back to finish the same variety

Both were back grading the next day thanks to Tony Rowe and the team at CED Group / Laser Electrial in Ballarat

Standout varieties so far:

Bondi Peas: Does what peas traditionally don’t do and sit up!

Shotgun Wheat: Looks to be the real deal as far as a Scepter replacement with many growers already falling out of favour with Matador and Scepter continuing to revert back to its parent roots!

Neo Barley: For two reasons. 1) irrigated and timely sown crops looking amazing with great yields and 2) dryland or heavier crops with about as many screenings issues as Planet - could have been a lot worse if it wasn’t for the soft finish. With Neo being the flavour of the month in many areas, it might be worthwhile reducing sowing rates to avoid screenings issues …

S**t in varieties such as Spartacus, Maximus and even Neo are becoming more prominent! Speak with your agronomist about potentially incorporating a Tecuconazole type fungicide such as Raxil to aid with s**t relief. Be prepared to do 2-3 foliar sprays with a Tebuconaloze to further reduce s**t issues

We have a few growers that have s**t fungicide resistant seed despite doing all of the above and our only suggestion going forward for them is to find newer seed

As with every post - bookings are coming in thick and fast, don’t forget to call Jeff on 0428 584 309 to book in - and give us a heads up for an anomalies like vetch in lentils/peas etc so we are well prepared!

Loose s**t in barley continues to be an ongoing issue

Barley varieties that have genetics from the Dash/Hindmarsh family are more susceptible than others

Hindmarsh, La Trobe, Spartacus, Maximus, Compass and Neo have proven to be extremely susceptible

New virulent strains of s**t can affect even traditionally resistant varieties

Older seed treatments with the active Tebuconazole in Raxil-T still appear to be most effective against s**t

Growers that we have treated their barley seed with Raxil-T on its own or in conjunction with a newer fungicide such as Systiva, Rancona Dimension, Vibrance or EverGol Energy have had very little or no s**t present as opposed to growers we have treated without Raxil-T

UPL who make Rancona Dimension have changed their label this season, strongly suggesting those treating susceptible barley varieties should no longer treat at the low rate of 0.8L/t, rather the mid rate of 2.0L/t should be the standard for s**t

Some agronomists have suggested using a Tebuconazole as a single seed treatment or to compliment a newer fungicide

It has also been suggested that applications of systemic foliar fungicide containing the active ingredient Tebuconazole at ear emergence to late flowering can reduce loose s**t infection in subsequent forming seed

S**t spores in s**t affected grain can contaminate headers, augers and other equipment. Retaining and replanting seed infected with s**t is not recommended. Obtaining new parent seed or from a trusted “s**t free” source is highly recommended

As always, discuss these options with an agronomist to assist in making an informed decision

And just like that - we are back grading for another year!

Currently we are booked up til early February with the exception of a few weekend days

If you haven’t booked already give Jeff a call

For ease of use and formulation, our preferred seed treatments to apply are:

FUNGICIDE: Vibrance or Rancona Dimension
INSECTICIDE: Cruiser 350

As we are back to two high capacity seed graders since Jeff has retired, our ability to make return trips to farm is severely limited

In order to assist us with this:
• get seed testing done early
• keep your best quality grain for seed
• have grain in one location
• grade from silos into trucks or field bins
• small tonnages of new varieties, organise other growers to grade at the same locaton to avoid us doing the same seed at multiple farms
• varieties under a 30 tonne average - get from another grower

The modifications/upgrades that have been done have yielded between 10-12% greater throughput which will also help with our efficiency

We are yet to find a way to speed up our cleandown, packing up and travel time!

Townrow Quality Seed Grading Service would like to formally advise you of an operational change that will take effect from the upcoming season.

Jeff Townrow will be stepping down from full-time seed grading operations.
Jeff has been instrumental in the success and reputation of our business over many years.
While he will no longer be operating a seed grader on a full-time basis, he will continue to take bookings and coordinate the seed grading schedule between November and June.

Over the last 3 years we have tried multiple unsuccessful attempts to find a suitable seed grader operator to train and take over from Jeff.

As a result of this change, the business will now operate two high capacity seed graders with two operators, rather than three. Over the off season we have invested in upgrades to the twin steer graders to ensure we are as efficient as possible.

- MINIMUM VOLUME & REQUIREMENTS -

To ensure we can maintain a productive and efficient work schedule moving forward, Townrow Quality Seed Grading Service will apply firm operational minimum average tonnes per variety.
Townrow Quality Seed Grading Service will now operate on a minimum average throughput of 30 tonnes per variety.
Where this minimum is not met, we suggest that customers coordinate with neighbouring or larger growers to source graded seed.
Grading seed from silos into trucks or field bins is the most efficient way to grade seed. It ensures our ability to maintain a constant flow of grain and provide the best graded seed for all growers.
Grading all seed in the one location ensures we can maximise our efficiency. We lose about an hour each time we pack up, change varietities or location.

These policies will allow us to manage seasonal demand effectively, minimise downtime between jobs, and maintain consistent service standards across all grading runs.
Hourly rates may apply for minimum volumes, relocation, return visits or inefficient grading. Hourly and per tonne rates do not include seed treatment charges.

- SEED TESTING & SCHEDULING -

We acknowledge that many customers rely on external seed testing (including germination, purity, and variety testing) before confirming final tonnages.
Delays in receiving test results can significantly restrict our ability to schedule grading, particularly during peak periods.
Customers are strongly encouraged to send seed samples for testing as early as possible and to provide indicative volumes where available.
All grading work is scheduled in order of booking confirmation, with early bookings receiving priority within the seasonal program.
Late confirmation of volumes may compromise our ability to accommodate grading requests within the season.

With only two seed graders operating, we will not have the same flexibility to make return to farm visits as in previous years. Grading all seed in one visit ensures you are not waiting on us to return later in the season to begin sowing.

- OUR COMMITMENT -

These changes are not a reflection of the value we place on our customers.
We sincerely appreciate the support shown to Townrow Quality Seed Grading Service over many years and recognise the role our customers have played in building the business.

The implementation of minimum volume requirements is necessary to ensure the ongoing efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of our operations.

We pride ourselves in the quality work that we do.
Our meticulous clean down process is pivotal to ensure the purity of your seed.
Unless instructed otherwise, we will always undertake a full clean down between each grain variety.
As all seed is separated by size and density, there will always be certain instances where we cannot guarantee 100% removal of all contaminants in each seed variety.

- SEED TREATMENTS -

We carry all our seed treatments in bulk tanks on board for maximum efficiency when grading so we are not swapping containers which can run empty then cause the seed treater to stop and to minimise exposure to seed treatments.
All seed treatments are fresh each season and are agitated and strained prior to decanting into our bulk tanks on each seed grader.
All Cruiser 350, P-Pickel and Gaucho we apply is within 3 months of manufacture which helps to minimise blockages in chemical lines and minimise exposure to seed treatments.

Even cleaned grain when augered will create dust. We strongly suggest wearing PPE when angering treated seed and filling air seeders to minimise your exposure to this dust!

Both seed graders have an unfiltered line with the ability to apply trace elements such as zinc. These unfiltered lines are not for seed treatments.

If you have any questions regarding bookings, scheduling, or the application of this policy, please contact Jeff on 0428 584 309 during the booking period.

We thank you for your understanding and continued support.

PLEASE NOTE - we have new bank details moving forward.

A reminder to all of our customers, yes we treat beans/lentils/peas/vetch - however, to ensure good grain hygiene and eliminate treated pulses contaminating the next variety - we will require your auger or belt to take treated pulses away from our grader.

For anyone wondering why, Jeff tried it once about 16 years ago and it’s about a 4 hour clean down procedure with a pressure washer washing the buckets and outload belt which is messy and time consuming and we don’t have quick access to a pressure washer

The long awaited arrival of Victrato is here. Victrato is the latest seed treatment from Syngenta for a label claim of Crown Rot suppression at 200mL/tonne of treated seed.

Victrato is a stand alone fungicide targeting Crown Rot and should be used in conjunction with your traditional seed treatment application targeting s**t and bunt such as Vibrance and Russian Wheat Aphid with Cruiser 350.

Victrato is a well formulated and has shown positive results in various trial sites across the country - however despite these positives, Victrato will be in short supply this season primarily due to the late approval from the APVMA.

Have a chat to your agronomist and do your own research and if this seed treatment is a fit for you, provided we can source some we will more than happily apply Victrato on your seed.

That panicked late arvo phone call approx. 3pm from Jake

“Yeah, I reckon I’m gonna run short by a bit”

Yeah no worries mate, how much and when?

“Yeah, about 15 tonne …

Ahh righto, so “just a bit?” … Tomorrow morning or tonight?

“Yeah, I’ve gotta get it first, I’ll get back to ya!”

Less than 4 hours after the phone call, we are done! Good night for it too! Hoping for decent rain this weekend!

This year, I thought I’d start something different and it’s a best presented seed incentive

The majority of growers are now aware that bigger, heavier and graded/cleaned seed generally gives you the seeds with best vigour and usually less air seeder dramas

In order for seed graders/cleaners to give you the best cleaned seed, we need you to keep your best seed so we can use bigger screens and more air to give the best seed result. As Jeff loves to say “it’s not a magic wand!”

Obviously there’s circumstances where you’ll get peas or lentils that get hammered and you’ve got plenty of dirt in them but these are few and far between these days due to many growers adopting rollers and crop lifters

We do often wonder why someone silos are left for seed and then get told “ohh this got rejected at the receivals so we thought you’d be able to tidy it up” - not always the case. S**t in and s**t out is sometimes the result

To reward our growers for providing us their best seed, I’ll be crowning “best graded seed” for different commodities. The crowned seed champions will have $1,000 taken off next years seed grading account and in the case there is a second place, they will have $500 taken off their account and yes, you can take out the each category!
