Introducing Erskine Residence by B.E Architecture. We look forward to showcasing this Project starting with the custom-made entry door built in the Dome Workshop.

“The importance of a houses’ entry is to create a sense of anticipation for what lies within.

The front door to our Erskine Residence was custom made in the builders own workshop, finished in an oak timber screen detail repeated throughout the interior of the house.

An oversized timber handle was produced using a block of solid oak that was scoured in an irregular Criss cross pattern and randomly chipped off with a chisel creating an irregular pattern to its face.

These custom details extend throughout the entire project and are only possible through the inputs of the builder and trades that make these designs a reality.

Thank you to Dome Building, their Workshop team led by Chris Peff, and the Construction Manager Dan Fuller who presiding over the construction of this beautiful residence.” - Words by B.E Architecture.

In the heart of the gallery district of the home, stand six grand columns, each soaring to 6.5 meters, with a diameter of 600 millimetres. These columns are exposed, rising from the ground level to the first floor.

A 90-tonne crane positions cages, facilitating the placement of formatubes spanning 35 meters across the front yard to the farthest column.

This process, executed in a single pour, ensures a seamless finish that eliminates any hint of a cold joint.

Up lights have been thoughtfully integrated into the slab on both sides of every column. Additionally, careful bracing is required for the first-floor slab due to the presence of hydronics in the ground floor slab. We look forward to showcase this remarkable project designed my Workroom.

We take immense pride in our restoration projects, and this heritage-listed brick chimney is the perfect example of the meticulous work that goes into preserving history. Initially, the plan was to retain the chimney whilst removing the breast and adding steel supports. However, unforeseen structural deterioration rendered this plan unsafe. After receiving town planning approval due to its heritage status, we proceeded with the work.

Working closely with Brick and Mortar Bricklaying, each brick was carefully labelled, measured, and numbered before meticulously deconstructing the chimney. Following the installation of necessary steel supports and the demolition of the breast, we began rebuilding the chimney, faithfully replicating its original charm using the same mortar mix and a sponge finish.

For us, developing a design with a client for their home is an inclusive process that values the experiences, thoughts and needs of our client.
A good solution is reached together, through our combined experiences and not imposed upon a client as a prescription of aesthetics.

Likewise, the crafting of that solution into a built form, requires a collaboration between architect, builder and client. Where the architectural intent is collectively understood, and the pathway set out to achieve it always starts with the end in mind.

Steel substructures are a common practice throughout construction, we have applied this approach in our Beaconsfield Road project, by opting for steel instead of timber, we are able to achieve smaller member sizes, resulting in a more time-efficient and architecturally pleasing outcome.

The steel elements were engineered and manufactured off-site in accordance with the architectural and structural drawings. The construction process for the 13-meter steel truss at the rear of the property involved installation using two cranes and a team of riggers.

The steel columns were positioned according to surveyed grid lines, ensuring precise alignment, and then firmly secured in place through plumbing and bracing techniques. Once the columns were set, the beams were lifted into place using cranes. After ensuring they were plumb and straight, they were bolted and welded.

Following this stage, carpenters will utilise the steel framework as a foundation to construct the timber frame and finalise the substructure of the building.

“If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need” - Marcus Tullius Cicero

First glimpse of the South Yarra garden house entry pond.

Situated in the leafy suburb of South Yarra, this house is organised around a restrained entry courtyard and an expansive north-facing garden. Although designed to reveal a distinct sequence of rooms and to forge a clear relationship between inside and outside space, it was the building’s material that became the foremost determining element in its architecture. Enveloped in a stone skin, the house gains a physical solidity reminiscent of the early houses of Guilford Bell. From the street the house appears a combination of opaque and in-penetrable layers, characterized by both the stonework’s imposing physical presence and its use within a formal composition. As a result of the resolutely limited palette of materials, the building presents itself as a completely interlocked composition of material and form, creating a strong interplay between domestic programme and garden space.

The heritage façade at Caroline Street has been restored to its original 1920s design, maintaining the architectural style attributed to Marcus Martin. The building follows a Georgian Revivalist style, characterised by its classical details. The renovation and extension of Caroline Street involved a comprehensive process that included underpinning the original structure using a series of pile footings. This was done to create space for the underground level car parking and additional amenities.
