We are delighted to have Carlton Cottage win an award at this year’s Houses Awards. Thank-you to the Jury, we are thrilled to have this recognised alongside so many impressive projects.

This project was realised through the collaborate vision of .peters.constructions .i.brown &

Jury Citation: Carlton Cottage is, in every way, a beautiful small home. The addition thoughtfully recasts a modestly scaled Victorian terrace for contemporary living by considering how a home can continually cater to a growing family, now and in the future.

The addition’s skillion roof reimagines the traditional lean-to and achieves elegant proportions through volume. A small courtyard separates old from new, bringing much needed light and air to the existing home. Two separate worlds combine harmoniously as the shift in scale is set as a sequence of overlapping volumes.

Rather than prescribing the function of each space, the design considers short- and long-term adaptability of the home. The conventions of intense joinery elements to describe settings do not exist at all within the living spaces, and this looseness allows for family activities to merge and shift according to need.

Distinctions between rooms are hard to discern, as are the boundaries between inside and outside, public and private. It is easy to imagine the family being drawn to the rear garden through the five massive, glazed pivoting doors, and beyond, to the shared space of the neighboring laneway. Inside, a mezzanine with a set of sliding screens can be used for work, rest or play.

The jury admired how Carlton Cottage values spatial quality over quantity of rooms, and delighted in its long-life, loose fit design strategy. It is an inviting and immensely livable home that offers replicable lessons for the adaption of older housing in our inner suburbs.

Carlton Cottage received an Architecture Award at the Victorian Architecture awards. Thankyou to the jury, we are delighted to have the project recognised amongst so many brilliant projects. The project was realised through the collaboritve vision of .peters.constructions .i.brown &

Jury Citation:
It’s a familiar adage within architecture that the simplest ideas are the hardest to pull-off.

Beyond a revitalised cottage and welcoming front garden, Lovell Burton have created an elegant, adaptable pavilion for the evolving needs of their young family. The new skillion roof discreetly peeps above the cottage roof line, dramatically dipping down towards the rear yard. Ferned courtyards become “gills” of light and air between old and new.

The payoff of this simple and clearly articulated gesture is surprisingly dynamic - where shifts in spactial experiences and aspect are offset by the consistency of a singular ceiling plane overhead. A quiet, sophistcated approach to materiality and detailing reinforce the clarity of an overarching concept.

If this home were to be considered a prototype for Lovell Burton’s ideology, it has struck an admirable balance: the confidence to experiement, paired with an approach to detail and arrangement that has been refined over time

Spring St Apartment
The material palette drew on existing brass elements in the 1970s apartment building. We worked closely with & the client to workshop the right finish. The darkened brass will patina over time with use, gradually becoming more golden. The clients loved the idea that the island bench would begin to soften, show the lines and tell the story of use & life well lived.

Spring St Apartment featured in annual issue of Kitchens + Bathrooms. Thank you to for kind words & to for the photography.

A retrofit of an existing 1970s apartment, the original floor plate characterised by a series of dividing walls that formalised the living experience & obstructed views of the city. The design sought to open up the apartment facilitating relaxed relationships between spaces & the ability to entertain. The kitchen became a central focus with the monolithic brass island bench acting as an anchor to the space. The dark stained timber pods and brass elements were contrasted against the other finishes. Drawing on the idea of chiaroscuro, which uses the play of dark materials against light to pull into focus a beautiful outlook.
