Hogan Research Group

Hogan Research Group Our group conducts a range of both fundamental and applied multidisciplinary research focused on expanding the bounds of Analytical Science.

We pursue the development of new chemistries and new technologies which will result in exquisitely low detection limits and enhanced selectivity. Building on our advances in fundamental science, we seek to develop novel sensing technologies and miniaturised instruments for use outside the laboratory setting. Working at the interface of electrochemistry and photochemistry, we have pioneered several

new approaches to detection science. Our group is a world leader in the application of electrochemiluminescence (ECL) detection to mobile phone readable paper microfluidic sensors and the development of potential resolved multi-coloured ECL or 3D ECL.

We recently published some work, led by PhD candidate David Macedo, presenting a method to get a more accurate measurement of return peak current in CV experiments. You can read the paper here:

https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.analchem.3c04181

We've also made a program that automatically performs this analysis, available at https://github.com/davedavedavem/diffusional-fitter

There's some sample data there too if you'd like to try it out.

The current version works for data with a single pair of peaks, but David Macedo is also working on future versions which can handle multi-peak CVs. He's looking at providing more options for capacitive current correction too.

The difficulty associated with accurately measuring the height of the back peak (Ipb) in cyclic voltammetry (CV) has long plagued electrochemists. Most commonly, Ipb is measured by extrapolating a linear fit from a selected region of a voltammogram after the switching potential (Eλ), but without su...

Researchers have shown how thousands of dollars can be shaved off the cost of a portable medical diagnostic instrument by basing it on a small, cheap computer, known as a Raspberry Pi.

Diseases are often diagnosed by quantifying the levels of certain proteins in samples like blood, but this is usually done in a pathology lab using expensive instruments.

The research team, led by Professor Conor Hogan, developed a portable instrument which measures the amount light emitted from samples under electrical stimulation, a process known as electrochemiluminescence.

By significantly reducing the cost of point-of-care medical diagnostic tools, the hope is that disease monitoring could become more accessible in developing countries and remote communities.

Our latest paper which describes a simplified but analytically powerful electrochemiluminescence instrument and sensor: "A simple, low-cost instrument for electrochemiluminescence immunoassays based on a Raspberry Pi and screen-printed electrodes"

Check it out - it's free to access until 24 May.

A powerful, yet low-cost and semi-portable electrochemiluminescence (ECL) biosensing device is described. It is constructed around a Raspberry Pi sing…

We're delighted to share our latest paper, hot off the press: 'Intense near-infrared electrochemiluminescence facilitated by energy transfer in bimetallic Ir-Ru metallopolymers'.

The facile synthesis of a bimetallic polymer is demonstrated by a single-step modification of [Ru(bpy)2PVP10]2+ (bpy = bipyridine, PVP = poly-4-vinylp…
