MEET OUR 2024 SORTA ESSAY COMPETITION WINNERS FROM NIGERIA!

After being seen over 10,000 times, and with over 500 engagements, we've found our 3 winners!

3rd position goes to ELIJAH E., 14 years old;
from Baptist’s Boys High School, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Phone number: ###X ### X911

It would seem Elijah finally found an outlet for dealing with his frustration over littering in his community. So, for him, his zero-waste plan was clear- to embark on an educative campaign against littering, both online and in person, starting right at his school. Plus, he said he would use the tips and advice on the Sorta app as his manual for creating a structured strategy. Congratulations, Elijah, for conceiving a simple yet brave plan.

2nd position goes to ENOCH M.E., 16 years old;
from Baptist’s Boys High School, Ogun State, Nigeria.
Phone number: ###X ### X937

Enoch learnt about the competition from a friend who passed the basic details to him. In fact, Enoch only participated because of his love for expressing his thoughts publicly through debates and essay writing. Little did he know that his exposition on his zero-waste plan, which included shopping for greener environmentally friendly products by using the Sorta app as a tool to guide his choices, and an unwitting suggestion for a new helpful product-scanning feature on the Sorta app, would earn him a 2nd place position and a cash prize! Way to go Enoch!

1st position goes to MERIT I., 14 years old;
from Dazzle International High School, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Phone number: ###X ### X399

Merit’s zero-waste ideas centred around making Art and Crafts from waste cartons and clothing. By creating high-value items from trash, not only did Merit create a business idea, but, just like Sorta, Merit is already building on her creative upcycling ideas and is ready to take them global! Congratulations to you Merit on a well-deserved win!

And to everyone who participated in one way or the other, we thank you and wish you a happy INTERNATIONAL DAY OF ZERO WASTE!

'WHY SECONDHAND MARKETS AND (THEIR) APPS ARE NOT A SOLUTION TO CLOTHING WASTE' (The Conversation, March 12 2024)

This is true because that system mostly slows waste creation by recirculating used clothes. However, it does little to persuade people not to buy unsustainable clothing in the first place.
..that's why the SORTA app includes the SPECIAL SECRETS function, to tell you whether BUYING certain items would be a good idea for the environment.

Here's the news story:

Secondhand markets are built to increase consumption, not cut it back.

ABOUT THAT SINGLE-USE PLASTIC BAN IN LAGOS...

Great policy! But how can we make it more useful and sustainable lest it fizzles out?

1. Don't push paper-made products to the public as a sustainable alternative. It actually isn't. Paper biodegrades but it needs nearly 4 times more energy to manufacture than that needed for manufacturing a plastic bag of a comparable weight.

2. Promote the use of more durable polythene bag. Plastic isn't all that bad when you can reuse it several times, like the 'Bagco' bags our mothers reuse for local market purchases

3. Try exchange schemes for plastic food containers, like the kind Coca-Cola already does with their glass bottles.

4. Let the 'ban-campaign' be more wholesome by emphasizing the benefits of adopting the 5-Rs (i.e., Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Repair and Rot).

Finally, the government should be careful with the term 'single-use plastics', because this would include all packaged food items such as snacks, cooking condiments, beverages and even bread, all of which use soft-plastic packaging.
