The chilly nights meant warmer sleeps on the Sunny Coast Sleeper this weekend, with 21 people accessing safe sleeps and support over the weekend, with 15 in Maroochydore and 6 in Nambour.
A massive thank you to our caretakers, bus drivers, drivers’ drivers, housekeeping crew and night volunteers who rugged up in the cold and helped make sure everyone on board felt safe, warm and cared for throughout the night.
We also want to thank our funders, supporters and community partners. Without your ongoing support, the Sunny Coast Sleeper simply wouldn’t operate.
With demand continuing to grow, we are now looking at extending the Nambour service to two nights a week. To help make this happen, we are currently seeking community members to volunteer in the roles of bus drivers, caretakers, night service volunteers, drivers’ drivers and housekeeping.
Every one of these volunteer roles helps provide rough sleepers with something many people take for granted: a safe night’s sleep. Restorative sleep plays a huge role in both physical and mental wellbeing. It helps improve memory, concentration and problem-solving, strengthens the immune system, reduces stress, and gives the body and mind a chance to recover.
The Sunny Coast Sleeper isn’t just a bus. It’s a circuit breaker. Sometimes the first step forward isn’t a housing application or a job interview, it’s simply getting enough sleep to think clearly again.
If you would like to volunteer for the Sunny Coast Sleeper and help provide a safe place for people to rest, please email [email protected] and we can send you out a volunteer information package. If you are waiting on a reply, please check your spam or junk folder.
The price of one large Big Mac meal can help improve someone’s physical and mental wellbeing while helping keep the wheels turning and the doors open for those who need it most.
