The chilly nights meant warmer sleeps on the Sunny Coast Sleeper this weekend, with 21 people accessing safe sleeps and support over the weekend, with 15 in Maroochydore and 6 in Nambour.

A massive thank you to our caretakers, bus drivers, drivers’ drivers, housekeeping crew and night volunteers who rugged up in the cold and helped make sure everyone on board felt safe, warm and cared for throughout the night.

We also want to thank our funders, supporters and community partners. Without your ongoing support, the Sunny Coast Sleeper simply wouldn’t operate.

With demand continuing to grow, we are now looking at extending the Nambour service to two nights a week. To help make this happen, we are currently seeking community members to volunteer in the roles of bus drivers, caretakers, night service volunteers, drivers’ drivers and housekeeping.

Every one of these volunteer roles helps provide rough sleepers with something many people take for granted: a safe night’s sleep. Restorative sleep plays a huge role in both physical and mental wellbeing. It helps improve memory, concentration and problem-solving, strengthens the immune system, reduces stress, and gives the body and mind a chance to recover.

The Sunny Coast Sleeper isn’t just a bus. It’s a circuit breaker. Sometimes the first step forward isn’t a housing application or a job interview, it’s simply getting enough sleep to think clearly again.

If you would like to volunteer for the Sunny Coast Sleeper and help provide a safe place for people to rest, please email [email protected] and we can send you out a volunteer information package. If you are waiting on a reply, please check your spam or junk folder.

The price of one large Big Mac meal can help improve someone’s physical and mental wellbeing while helping keep the wheels turning and the doors open for those who need it most.

A chilly, clear-sky start to the day didn’t slow our One Roof crew down, with Fran, Ned, Janita and Zai in the kitchen cooking up a delicious lunch for 70 community members.

Today’s menu was Mexican meatballs served on Mexican rice with a rich homemade tomato sauce, cheesy garlic bread, followed by peach upside-down cake and custard for dessert.

Orange Sky Australia also had a cracker of a day, completing 8 loads of washing for people doing it tough in the cold weather.

A big thank you to OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie for the fresh produce and ongoing support, and to North Coast Food for the generous donation of two cartons of butter. Support like this helps make these community meals possible.

Our next community lunch is this Thursday from 12.00pm–1.30pm. Please note we ask for a gold coin donation, which helps cover the cost of takeaway containers.

With no let up in the rain, our One Roof kitchen crew still turned up with smiles and a positive attitude. Today, 48 enjoyed pasta carbonara bake, followed by warm baked pear crumble and custard for dessert.

Thank you, OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie, for your continued support and weekly donations of fresh produce, pantry items and meat. Thank you, Lee, from Coles Kawana, for delivering pantry items kindly donated by the community

Another busy One Roof Community Meal today with 66 delicious roast chicken and veggie mains served, followed by chocolate mousse with macerated strawberries and cream for dessert.

Thank you to Fran, Zai, Coral, Sue, and Ned for your teamwork, creativity, and the effort you continue to put into the meals each week. The meal not only looked amazing but tasted just as good.

Orange Sky Laundry also had a very busy day, completing 9 loads of washing due to the ongoing rain and many rough sleepers arriving with wet clothing and bedding. Access to clean, dry clothes makes a real difference, especially during this weather.

Thank you also to OzHarvest Sunshine Coast and Gympie for the fresh produce donated throughout the week. Your ongoing support helps make these meals possible for so many people doing it tough in our community.

Shout out to Jo, who is recovering from hip surgery and John, who is collecting the pantry items from the trolleys out the front of Coles supermarkets every week. Thank you.

Congratulations to our Sunny Coast Sleeper volunteer coordinator, Leonie, on being recognised as one of today’s Fairfax Award recipients.

This recognition is well deserved. From coordinating volunteers to stepping into multiple volunteer roles across the Sunny Coast Sleeper and supporting guests, Leonie consistently goes above and beyond behind the scenes without ever seeking recognition.

Congratulations, Leonie, and thank you for everything you do.

Congratulations to Mitchell from the Nambour Community Centre on receiving his award in recognition of the incredible work he does there.
