Despite the recent showers, things are certainly drying up very quickly & we’ve already had a sample of what’s ahead for the fire season

Have you carried out your fire season preparations?

Stay safe this fire season & lets not be complacent; here are some simple things you can do now before the heat really hits

• Remove leaf litter from the roof gutters & valleys
• Check your irrigation systems, pumps and hoses are in good working order
• Remove waste piles from around the home eg: piles of sticks & leaves
• Brush cut overgrown grasses / shrubs around the home
• Ensure the lawns are mowed
• On rural properties make sure the is clear access for emergency vehicles
• Have a fire plan in place for each member of the family including pets & livestock
• Even if there is no fire at your property, be prepared for heavy smoke and protect family members with respiratory problems

VEGGIE GARDEN PROGRESS

So from commencing these garden beds in mid June until this week, 2 August, the progress is pretty outstanding

The money & time invested in these gardens will be enjoyed for years to come

As promised, here is the creation of what will be a very productive vegetable garden

Started with some raised beds filled using the Hügelkultur method, starting with some 20mm quincan for drainage, logs and mulch for bulk fill. Followed by a mix of unwashed sand and 10mm quincan and finally 300mm of premium garden mix

Planted out with a selection of seasonal veggies and mulched with sugar cane

I reset the stepping pavers and dressed the walkways with 20mm red quincan

TIME FOR AN UPDATE ON THE GARDEN

I had / have a few caterpillars having a good old time in my garden and either I was impatient or the milk / molasses spray didn’t seem to be working as fast as I’d like
I have sprayed with chilli & garlic solution and have very quickly reduced the numbers significantly
Not a very fair trial I admit!

Overall the plants are powering with only the cabbages being knocked about. The very sad looking one I have left to its own defences as a sacrificial plant to protect the others
All plants are watered with bore water and once a week with Seasol & Powerfeed liquid fertilizers via watering can.
These products are doing a great job, we’re already sampled our first cucumbers

The beauty of doing all this is that I can confidently go to a client and recommend tried & tested products / processes
I’ll be posting on a client’s new raised beds that I started a few weeks back and keep that progress updated too
Until then, happy gardening season and if you need any help give us a call

That time of year here on the tablelands to plant out those veggie gardens.

As I’m certainly no guru, I kicked off a few weeks back and am trying a bit of R & D in the garden

We’ve all heard about companion planting, but does it actually work?
Well, instead of planting all like vegetables in rows like last year, I’m mixing them about and throwing herbs & other beneficial’s in amongst them to test this theory.
Another change this year is the type of mulch used.
Last year I used tea tree mulch and didn’t have too many issues with insects until late in the season.
This year I have used sugar cane mulch and already have signs of caterpillars and other chewing insects attacking my seedlings
Tomorrow I’ll be trying another old school formula of milk & molasses and see if I can curb these nasties before they take hold (last year was garlic & chilli spray)

Now the rain has subsided, it’s a great time to get outside and enjoy the garden, so hopefully this may inspire you

See the links below for information on Milk & Molasses sprays
I’ve also added a seasonal planting guide to help you out

These late rains are giving us an extended chance to lock the moisture in our garden beds, so if you haven’t mulched yet you should get onto it

Why Mulch? See below for some links on the benefits of mulching

When buying your mulch don’t skimp out and buy the cheapest you can find
Why? Many baled up produce is full of weeds which you then introduce into your gardens
Once the weeds are there, it takes a massive effort to eradicate them.

Left unchecked the problem continues to escalate and can quickly become simply overwhelming
This costs you more time, more money and the chances of 100% removal is slim, so you could be kicking yourself every wet season when the weeds reshoot.

The following pictures are of a property that I have been revisiting over some months repeatedly alternating between hand weeding & spraying trying to eradicate a massive infestation after the owner unknowingly rolled out bales of mulch hay full of multiple weeds and grasses not present prior

Our Story

G’day there, my name is Andrew Bajjada and am the Owner / Operator of FKS Home Maintenance, a new property maintenance service provider exclusively servicing the Biboohra & Mareeba district.

As a young bloke fresh out of school, my initial training was with Qantas as an apprentice Aircraft Maintenance Engineer, which is where it was instilled in me that there is no room for short cuts. To this day I have maintained that & live by my own simple philosophy that “A business is only as good as its last job”.

I have been contracting for over 20 years in various fields and would consider myself a “Jack of all Trades” highly focused on providing a quality service and value for your buck.

FKS Home Maintenance can take care of all your regular yard maintenance requirements including tasks beyond just mowing & brush cutting.
