Opening the JND files: a handful of things about us that don't usually come up in a normal product post, but genuinely change how people think about buying custom outdoor furniture in Melbourne once they know them.

File Entry 1: every custom colour is already included in the price. A lot of suppliers treat "your choice of colour" as a premium add-on. We build it into the process from the start, because it's custom-made either way, so there's no reason to charge extra for you picking the colour that actually suits your venue or your home.

File Entry 2: we don't import. At all. Every single piece (benches, tables, bar furniture, cafe barriers, park and street furniture, custom shelving and signage) is made here in Melbourne from start to finish. "Commercial grade" is printed on so much furniture that most buyers have stopped questioning it: which is exactly the problem, because it's not a regulated term.

There's no independent body testing or certifying it before it goes on a label, which means it can genuinely mean "built for heavy daily use," or it can just mean "a step up from our cheapest range,” entirely at the maker's discretion.

That also means two products both labelled "commercial grade" aren't necessarily comparable at all; one supplier's version of the term can be a completely different build quality to another's, and there's no way to tell from the label alone.
What ACTUALLY separates a piece that survives five years of hospitality or public use from one that doesn't is frame material and thickness, weld quality, the timber type and how it's treated, and whether there's a REAL warranty behind it.

A label costs nothing to print and nothing to walk back if it turns out to be wrong.
A warranty is different: it's a promise the maker is financially accountable for, which is exactly why only suppliers confident in their own build actually offer one.

Most venues think of a damaged table as a small maintenance job; get it fixed when there's time, or just work around it.

Bar stools are one of those purchases people get WRONG more often than they'd expect, because the mistakes don't show up until after they're in use....

A stool that's ever so slightly the wrong height for your bar, one that's one kilo too light, is light enough to blow over outdoors or get dragged around and scratched daily, or one where nobody thought about footrest position until customers are shifting uncomfortably an hour into their visit.

If you've EVER set up an alfresco dining area, you've probably realised planter boxes end up doing more work than people expect - we’re talking about marking the boundary of your permitted space (which is often a council requirement, not just a style choice), buffering noise and giving diners a bit of separation from foot traffic, and generally making the space feel intentional rather than just tables PLONKED on a footpath.

The problem is most people treat them as an afterthought and just grab whatever's cheapest - so yep, they warp, crack or tip over in wind within a season: right when they're meant to be doing a functional job, not just a decorative one.

Most fit-outs follow the same order without anyone deciding it on purpose: furniture gets sorted first because it's the obvious big-ticket item, and shelving or signage gets pushed to "we'll figure that out later." ... The problem is "later" usually means rushed - just grabbed from whatever's available (even if it’s from a different supplier, in a finish that doesn't match anything else in the space.)

It's worth knowing what each of these actually needs to hold up, because it's not just about matching timber.
Behind-bar shelving takes constant spills, weight and daily wear, so it needs to be built for that kind of use, not just look tidy on install day.
Retail or display shelving is really a selling tool: the height & spacing affect whether people actually notice what's on it, which generic shelving was never designed around.
And outdoor signage has to SURVIVE ACTUAL WEATHER, not just look sharp in the first week before the finish starts fading.

When shelving and signage are built alongside your furniture (same timber, same colour, same team!) the WHOLE SPACE reads as 1 considered decision instead of pieces bought from three different places at three different times, and you're working to one delivery timeline instead of chasing three 🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

Fair enough, because a lot of warranties are written to sound reassuring while being nearly impossible to claim on, especially when the supplier is overseas.
