“To stretch the heart wide enough to embrace contradiction and paradox” Thomas Moore

17/03/2022

Eight years ago, artist Maurice Goldberg started his creative renaissance with a deep dive into expressive self-portraiture. Today we're offering those same experiences that catapulted Maurice into his new creative career as a three part workshop series Aspects of Self.

Imagine a glorious deep dive into the art and heart of portraiture?
Imagine looking beyond the surface into the beauty and mystery that makes a great portrait far more than a good likeness. Imagine exploring multiple dimensions of portraiture and learning how to express what you discover through drawing, painting, sculpture and mixed media.

Sound interesting? If so our new weekend workshop series, Aspects of Self might be just what you’re looking for.

Through drawing, painting, sculpture and expressive abstraction you will explore the graphic techniques, traditions, ideas and psychology of portraiture. Each weekend workshop can be taken as a stand-alone experience or you may decide to combine all three to create a rich, six-day, deep dive into the incredibly diverse dimensions of creative portraiture.

Module One - Portraits From Drawing to Painting
This introductory workshop investigates the drawn and painted portrait. Day one explores the role of portraiture in art before diving into a broad, fast moving 2d portraiture experience. We explore line and drawn approaches before looking at the role of photography; how to use light to convey drama, emotion and tell a story and the difference between linear and tone shape approaches. Day two builds on the drawing and photography work of day one and focuses on you completing a single acrylic portrait painted on canvass.

Module Two - Portraits in the Third Dimension
Working in the round, Portraits in the Third Dimension explores and helps develop a shift in perception, thinking and expression. If you’re a painter and have never worked in 3d before this is a fantastic way to deepen your understanding of proportions, form and perspective in both sculpture and painting. Working from reference photos and sculpting clay on a premade armature, you will create a life size bust to take with you at the conclusion of the two days.

Module Three - Abstracted Expressive Portraits
This workshop explores the many abstracted and expressive dimensions to portraiture beyond representing the purely physical form. Abstracted Expressive Portraits expands upon the psychological possibilities of portrait painting through caricature, distortion and expressive abstraction. You will be encouraged to move beyond representing what you see as you journey towards uncovering essential, less tangible qualities of your subject's character and spirit. You will complete a range of experimental, multi-media ‘drawings’ and one completed acrylic or mixed media work on canvas.

Module One - Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th April - $625
Module Two - Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th May - $795
Module Three - Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th June - $625

Book all three workshops $1,875

Two Day Workshops pricing includes...

Limited to five participants per workshop.
The workshop exercises can be adapted to suit both portraiture of others and/or self-portraiture.

Artists’ Shabbat Online
Wednesday 2nd December 7.30 – 9.00pm
Art and the Elements of Design
Continuing Art and the Elements of Design this week we explore…
SPACE – THE OTHER DIMENSION.
When we explore and compose artwork it’s very easy to focus on the FORM; the positive, the ‘subject’, the object, the obvious dominant elements. In giving emphasis to form it’s possible to overlook the vitality and contribution of SPACE to effective composition and design.
SPACE can be described as the distance around and/or the area between design objects or elements. As an example, if you were to place an image on a page, the area that does not contain the image would constitute SPACE. SPACE can also be thought of as depth, the illusion created by linear and colour perspective, transparency and overlapping. It’s the yang to the yin!!!
I’m going to make the best effort I can to explore new artists this week and I encourage you to do the same. A couple I’ve found already…
· Andy Goldsworthy – natural installations.
· Sesshū Tōyō – space and perspective in Asian art.
· Alexander Rodchenko – a unique point of view.
· Pieter Bruegel the Elder – imaginative spaces.
I know we’ve seen him before but David Hockney’s exploratory use of photography and his Grand Canyon paintings cannot be overlooked.
I’ll attempt to keep my contribution a bit shorter tonight to give SPACE for you to bring your inspiring artists work to the table.
As always one of the best parts of Shabbat is when you bring artworks, artists or art movements to the table that others may not know – it’s a great way to extend the boundaries of our knowledge and place some lesser lights up there with the greats. Don't worry if you don't have time to prepare - simply come and listen or join in the chat.
I’m really looking forward to continuing this journey; lots to get our collective creative teeth into and, given how feely we tend to interpret the brief and wander off topic, I know it’s going to lead us into rich new realms of understanding.!!!
Artists’ Shabbat is a complimentary community contribution – i.e. it’s FREE. So please pass on the word to your artist friends and invite them to join us on the journey. They can come and share, join the discussion or simply sit and enjoy the rich conversation.
I’ve set up a recurring meeting in Zoom and you’ll find the link below. Please find a safe place to store the link and message me if you need to reconnect- I’ll post reminders and the link in our various forums each week along with the weekly topic.

Joyful creating… Paul
I’ve decided to rename/rebrand Artists’ Shabbat. I’d love to increase the participation rate and I wonder if the religious connotations of the word Shabbat might put people off. So I’m looking for ideas. I’d like to pitch it as a broad, inclusive, exploratory creative discussion on the arts. I’d like it to be open to everyone, current and past students and others. We will keep Shabbat for the remainder of the year and then launch into 2021 with something new. All ideas will be considered. Let’s find something that truly describes what we do and is a honey pot to those looking to engage in discussion with a supportive creative community.
“Space, the final frontier. Well, not exactly, but when it comes to graphic design it’s pretty important to “explore” (pun intended) its use. In fact, the use of space within a design is often a factor that is not considered enough, especially regarding how it can be used to compliment the other elements of design. So to begin, let’s determine what constitutes space.”
For thousands of years artists have been representing things in drawings, paintings and sculptures. A fundamental part of this endeavour has been creating and modelling FORM – either real form as in sculptures and installations or as an illusion in drawing, painting, photography and film. Tonight we explore the techniques that creators have used and artists whose work has had a seminal impact on art through the use of form.
Artists included tonight… Augustus Rodin, Henry Moore, Alberto Giacometti, Barbara Hepworth, Constantin Brancusi, Leonardo da Vinci, Michael Angelo, Caravaggio and more.
